Rob, that was my first thought, but the buds are clearly alternate. Some Aesculus have semi-alternate buds (or subopposite), but this plant looks more alternate with buds close together. A tough one, methinks.

I'll guess some kind of Alder - speckled (Alnus rugosa) or grey alder (Alnus incana) ?
