What about the Hobbs Block, the ones that started it all?

$389 for a block....Thats an insane price.

No doubt about it, they are not cheap, but you get what you pay for and IMO they are the best blocks in the world.

Ditto, you get what you pay for!

I've had a Hobbs block (5/8") for over 20 years. Still in use today.
I've had an ISC block catch wood and the sheave wouldn't turn after that. The ISC block was only in use for approx. 1 month.

I was interested in seeing if ISC did have some comparable blocks to the Hobbs and found this one, no quite on the same level (45K tensile versus 80K), but hadn't known about this website either before this search. Looks like some good prices:

Plus this one is aluminum like the Hobbs? Cool!

Thats the same one I/my company use(s). I don't know if its that exact same one but I know its yellow and there are 2 different WLL for the yellow blocks.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

.... the fact is that if you do this work long enough , you will need a small collection of blocks .... many times the success of a rigging plan depends on one more block and sling to achieve MA or beneficial line angle ....

Amen. Recently had block in the top of the tree, one at the base to redirect the line out of the danger zone and one above the GRCS to fare lead it in. Was actually looking for a place to put my 4th and last block

, but figured it was overkill

Re: Whats you favorite block?

..... a true honest answer is that my fave is a heavy duty 2 ton rated with a 360 degree swivel .... I tend to favor this one ... it is HEAVY ... but once installed who cares .... I have an ISC (red) which probably sees as much use with heavier lines and loads ... I also have several CMI's which I like BUT ... I find just aren't as tough ....

Re: Whats you favorite block?

....afterthought .... For heavy ground line runs (pull trees) I'll use my Tirfor and run a 5 inch Crosby rated at 4.5 tons ... the heavy swivel and the Crosby can run Nylon or Wire rope..... The ISC's are pretty much indestructible ... I hope I didn't make shopping worse ... Dave

Re: Whats you favorite block?

I don't run any rigging lines through a crosby block. The ones that I've seen have a v-grove in them specifically made to run wire rope through them.

Are the ones you are using different? Just curious.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

I'm realitively young in this industry. I only have/need 3 blocks. The oldest ISC block I have is 7 years old.

I have never bought anything else, nor have I had the need to buy anything else. I hope they last long enough for my kids to use.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

.... don't worry about the best deal , we are not discount shoppers were Arborists ... invest in the blocks you like , they will serve you well ... the trick is to avoid buying junk on some B.S. opinion ... Dave

You can get a better deal than that. Those blocks are wicked expensive.

Yeah, I know you can but that block is the one I like amd there is another ISC block I like and its this one

I like that block a lot. Its not to expensive, plenty strong, takes a good rope diameter, and you can "lock" it closed wit a wrench or something.

Re: Whats you favorite block?

I have a 3/4 and a 1 inch hobbs block. Also have a 3/4 ISC. I like all three of them. Wouldn't mind a few more. I remember seeing a big long hobbs block that my uncle used to have. Dont know the diameter, but it had to be at least an inch. It looked like a real beast. Has anybody on here seen or used one of those before?

Yeah, I've used 1. It was a 1" capacity Hobbs block. Aluminum cheek plates and sheave with a bushing. It was a monster of a block. I remember the cheek plates being about 5/8" thick. It was a snatch block with a 3/4" steel axle, and a 3/4" thumb screw with about a 3" long 'quarter inch' diameter rod going through for easy loosening and tightening.
