What Grinds Your Gears?

Im hoping to after this year. Not many companies want to hire a female so Im trying to get the exp to be a viable hire for a better company. I cant lift logs as big as what the guys lift, so I have to make up for it with skills and rock solid work ethic. Heres hoping
Most of us these days have mini skids for lifting the heavy logs anyway. Being reliable and listening are far more desirable to most employers than how heavy of a log you can lift. I 've have had a female employee on my crew that wasn't at all related to me. She would probably still be working for me if her whole family hadn't moved it state. As hard as it is to find good employees, I never understood why an employer would eliminate half of the possibly good ones by not hiring women. There are good companies that are open minded out there.

Many of the men out there likely aren’t allowed to swear in the house and the job site is where they vent their frustrations, maybe having a female onsite makes them feel like they can’t swear and cuss, or discuss the latest dirty magazine?

Learning to harness leverage in what you have to manhandle (pardon the pun) will get you further than brute strength, and have the added bonus of decreasing likelihood of injury... lifting/pushing/dragging a load from centre of gravity, using winch lines effectively, even keeping a 6ft piece of line with an eye on it so you can drag using the piece of rope so branch is clear from your legs, or can drag so piece is aligned with direction of travel etc so you have unimpeded momentum. Flipping/rolling heavy sections instead of lifting...

So many guys don’t do half this stuff and injuries can take their toll...

Being thrown into the bucket my first week of tree removal with no exp and proceeding to boom for a whole season with my anxiety levels through the roof before my boss gave me training. Im very new to the industry, this is only my second season and to be hired as a female Ive had to start with a tiny shit company that has almost zero regard for safety or proper procedure. My boss makes me want to choke him on a daily basis and none of the men on my crew will stand up to him so Im the one that has to constantly tell him when he’s being ridiculous. He just wants money and I just want enough to exp to go to a company that at leasts pays OT.

Aside from that, customers adding things after we arrive on site or neighbors asking us to come by and do something since we’re already there, like we had no further plans for our day.

And having to babysit our foreman when he collects payment to make sure he doesnt steal anymore tips.View attachment 68894
Welcome to the Buzz and the industry. I just started my second year in tree care and my youngest daughter wants to climb and do tree work. Stay safe!

Blowing the engine on your chipper and breaking a drive motor spindle on your mini, on the same job.

Or having three chippers down because when you tell the owner his shit is malfunctioning, he ignores it until the equipment is toast. Or having to change out chipper blades mid-job, stripped bolts and all because the owner didnt bother. Or telling the owner you need more 36’ chains and having him respond with telling you to stop using the 661 on small trees because of course I grab the heaviest saw to fell the smallest trees just for fun.
Laziness on the job is my single biggest peeve..Drives me nutz!

This shit. Ive worked in several skilled trades and they all have those guys who stand there acting like they dont see anything to be done. And even when you tell them they drag ass doing it and then go right back to being a human stump.

I do make a considerable contribution just by coming up with clever ways to get shit done so its easier for everyone and I definitely do so for myself. And I stay busy, I hate standing around. We had a guy booming and there just wasnt enough brush coming down to keep is all moving so I disassembled our dolly and hammered the axle straight so the wheels would stop rubbing on the frame. Im there everyday, on time, I drive our manual trans chip truck because no one else drives stick, I do everything I can to be useful. But I know an employer wont know these things when considering hiring me so I need some serious knowledge to back me up.

Oh thats definitely not an issue working with me. My foreman was trying to convince me to remove extra limbs because they were “leaning towards the building” and I yelled down “I dont care if they’re leaning over your mom and fucking her in the ass, Im not removing those”. He was laughing too hard to continue arguing with me

Some of the big outfits have been making very conscious efforts toward diversity welcoming females to the industry and trying to break the all male stigma. Might be worth looking if there’s a Davey or Bartlett in the area. I know they both put a lot of value into proper training and safety culture; the latter of the two I know from experience.

Im pretty sure we have a Davey

Much appreciated but Belleville is a 45 min drive from me, probably over an hour in morning traffic. Also currently my fiance and I both work at this company (I convinced him to come work with me because we BADLY needed good workers) and we have to get him another vehicle before I can move on.
