What Grinds Your Gears?

People letting their dogs out is a huge problem too! Someone recently said to me "if my dog comes over to you while you are working please don't pet him." I replied, "maybe you should keep your dog in the house while we are working or take him out on a leash."

Nothing wrong with stopping work on a job for two minutes and telling a homeowner to keep their dog under control.

I have ha a few close calls whereby the pet has rushed out the door into the work area when HO arrived home thankfully not when dropping heavy bits

Eating Surströmming ?

I hear the smell of it is so bad that it’s considered very poor manners to open a can indoors.
I gotta try that stuff sometime.
The hazing process at my old fire department was a liverwurst, onion, and Limburger cheese sandwich. Smelled pretty bad but I’d eat another.

Slogging away in 100 degree heat at the same house for 9 hours. Think the homeowner would so much as offer a glass of water?
I like a customer that treats you as a quest. Especially on a job where you are there for hours. Lunch, and drinks make me want to make sure the customer is extra pleased.

"These are good people. I like them,'' .....as I continue to do a little extra raking that wasn't even in our area of operation during final clean-up.

Well while I wait for the sprinklers to shut off, this one will probably grind a lot of gears.

last property I pull up and it’s the typical Long Island shit show of tree work. 15 guys deep on a one tree removal, zero PPE, yet a nice new chip truck, big chipper, skid steer and mini skid. Taking up both sides of the street and making a mess of things. This is typical, so I’ve become accustomed and numb to this stupidity. But then I saw the kid, must have been 9 freaking years old, in a company shirt standing next to the chipper. Must have been someone’s kid, but ZERO PPE. I wanted to say something once I finished my quick job, but they were already gone. Leaving behind a mess of leaves, dust and an axe.

$10 of donuts or ice cream sandwiches always leads to at least ten times that in free labor. I highly encourage all homeowners to follow this simple bang for your buck investment strategy.

Being thrown into the bucket my first week of tree removal with no exp and proceeding to boom for a whole season with my anxiety levels through the roof before my boss gave me training. Im very new to the industry, this is only my second season and to be hired as a female Ive had to start with a tiny shit company that has almost zero regard for safety or proper procedure. My boss makes me want to choke him on a daily basis and none of the men on my crew will stand up to him so Im the one that has to constantly tell him when he’s being ridiculous. He just wants money and I just want enough to exp to go to a company that at leasts pays OT.

Aside from that, customers adding things after we arrive on site or neighbors asking us to come by and do something since we’re already there, like we had no further plans for our day.

And having to babysit our foreman when he collects payment to make sure he doesnt steal anymore tips.3E267CAE-06C1-433D-A639-6476CF02060E.jpeg

Welcome to the Buzz

Im hoping to after this year. Not many companies want to hire a female so Im trying to get the exp to be a viable hire for a better company. I cant lift logs as big as what the guys lift, so I have to make up for it with skills and rock solid work ethic. Heres hoping
Some of the big outfits have been making very conscious efforts toward diversity welcoming females to the industry and trying to break the all male stigma. Might be worth looking if there’s a Davey or Bartlett in the area. I know they both put a lot of value into proper training and safety culture; the latter of the two I know from experience.
