Triangular Configuration of Conventional Gaffs

Pot's a heck of a lot cheaper than mill and lathe time at a machine shop!

Hold on tight to your Geckos Chopper!

Now I gaff trees and inject them with Round Up during each step to kill their little roots too!

PVC can be a very cheap method of proving a concept's validity prior to committing serious coin on it.

It's that 90 degree pulley at the top of the tube that cinches up tight once the lower tube is stepped on and extended. Needs to swivel, and does, to the extent the circle of your lanyard allows.

The concept's good. Now to slim it down and shorten it up a bit. Then add a few well placed rubber gripping surfaces.

It puts that spring in my step Tom!

Think of a cat's ability to extend and retract its claws.

Indeed these Innoculators will leave 5 digit tracks, with one claw much deeper than the others.

They're not quite finished yet.....

Note that both the round gaff tube housings and gaff needles will have over an inch of adjustment each!

A few milled slots in both titanium shanks, a few ball swivel connections and presto!

The doctor can innoculate you now!

I'd like to figure out a simple mechanism for locking the needles into the retracted position for walking on the ground.

Hmmm...I still don't follow...

I see the spring, now a yellow puck under the instep of the second stirrup. I guess that's to add bounce to your foot???

When I'm on spikes I want them to be a solid extension of my body not a flexible connection to the tree. If I move my foot in one plane or another I want the spike to respond in kind. Adding in a flexible connection doesn't make sense, to me.

What's the benefit of having springs on the top of the spike? It looks like there are stopper tabs on the lower part of the spike piece to keep them from being pushed back up the welded-on tube. If so, the spring on top doesn't seem to have a function.

In some way I guess I can see that allowing the spike itself rotate might be advantageous. That way the spike stays in position and the climber's foot can rotate without chewing out a hole in the tree.

In ice climbing front points and tools go into the ice and the movement pivots on the set of the points or tools. If the set rotates it loosens the hold which can lead to cutting out...which can lead to falls. First rule of ice climbing...no falls.

Interesting setup...would you clarify what I'm not seeing?

Tom, I think you're not seeing the fact that the points stick into the tree so much that you need a spring to assist in removal.
Jomoco, if you have ever used a climbing tree stand you would see that those cincher style climbers will be nothing but a headache for production tree work. They may work for the weekend warrior, but where's the market if they already own a ladder?

Dude, some of the skinned Wash Fans reach 90 feet tall here in SoCal. The spike trails going up their high sides are horrendous enough to make climbing above them too much for some climbers.

Admittedly most city palms are done by bucket these days and that's good until you run out of bucket heigt. That's when cinch tubes will be handy, as well as all the many Wash Fans that are inaccessible to a bucket.

Bud, I dont know much about you but I am pretty sure you dont really compare to jomoco.

I would hope that you would, out of respect, not question him. I mean really, he did invent the leather condom, err bark saver thingy.

Besides, without his ingenuity you wouldnt have that cycle powered ascender you use to get into the tree!

You do have one of those right?
