Nice crane! How do you determine that the ground is stable enough to support the crane? I'm guessing you get a lot of rain down there.

Thanks. We bought it, it broke down on the 3rd job, and has been down since October. We are very glad to have it back.
Experience is key there. We use pads and mats as seen in the pictures. In softer areas well bring in longer cribbing to help spread the load. Usually if its to wet to setup, its to wet to drive the crane in.

@Fivepoints Are those houses slab-on-grade foundations without any air-space beneath them?
I gather that some southern states, with different heating needs are built with slab-on-grade foundations.
When there is a foundation wall, especially new construction with recently disturbed earth, I gather that keeping outriggers a distance from the foundation wall is necessary. It is all that we have here.
My mother's 100+ year old house in Chicago is slab on grade, with a full-story, full-footprint basement that is above ground. All the heating ducts/ vents are in the basement ceiling.

Yes they are slab built. Its very common here but also there is a lot of houses with crawl spaces.
These houses are at least 10 years old so no recently disturbed dirt but i still much prefer to keep my distance if possible. We have a lot of clay in most of our soil around here so it usually supports the cranes very well.

Worked on picking an oak tree apart at 80 ft radius. Tree was dead and in danger of falling on the shed. We had to put the whole counterweight stack due to the radius. It gets a bit heavy with all 25,500 lbs of counterweight. They insisted we go ahead regardless of yard damage.

We had a new climber come in today for a trial day (we try to do that, to make sure he can do what he says, and make sure he likes working with us). Great guy, from Salvador. He hung off a crane on two removals, a Silver Maple with real bad root rot, and a crispy, dead 70’ Red Oak. The Oak took only and hour and a half, I was impressed with his skills today, he’s hired!

Wanted to give a shoutout to a couple pieces of gear. All are highly recommended.
Hoffman modified Meindles. You won’t find a better pair of spur climbing boots. nuff said.
Buckinginghams new steel climbers with offset stirrup and their grip technology hybrid gaff (2 & 3/8” with a slight forward angle). Just a killer spur. Wesspur is currently selling them for $190 a pair. Slap some caddy pads on and you have a setup you could spend your entire career in.
Last but certainly not least is the MB 2.0. A supremely comfy and supportive harness. Been running the shit out of mine for 4-6 weeks and it one of the finest removals saddles I have ever used.

I agree with the Caddy pads. I have tried most of the others and always go back. I run the narrow ones because of my chicken legs.
What are you using for upper strap? Been looking for a velcro upper strap for them but haven't found one I like yet. Those look ideal.
And did you modify the Meindles that way, or someone do it for you?

Meindles are modified by Hoffmans in Idaho. I run the 6” cruiser.

I bought a pair of Tango Six boots last fall and they have turned out to be crap. I should have known better. You get what you pay for. I do believe I will give those Meindls a whirl.
