timber hitch for rigging

I thought i heard once that you should always have at least 4 twists, and go half way around. But like i said thats what i heard and sometimes i make something up and convince my self someone told me that.

I was just looking to find out what others say.

i just think of it as a inferior knot. thanks

Well as you can see a lot of people like the TH.its definitely not an inferior hitch. Somebody was saying about the RB tightening up.I tried something one day and it worked well. When tieing the RB after making your loop and go around the rope and through the hole and come back out then around the other side of rope I do that twice around before I finish and go back in the hole it worked pretty good that may be another name for this that im not aware of havent seen it .

If you go 'around and around' you're on your way to tieing a Clock Hitch...care to take over for me Riggs?

The criteria for me to choose a timber/cow/clock hitch for lowering is to see if the hitch is going to have load and slack. If so...no timber hitch. I've had them open up and slide a bit. It's sure possible to loosed a load if you use ONLY a TH. I prefer running bowline/marls for loads.

Anchoring lowering devices at the base of a tree is different. The groundie can keep a close eye on the TH and snug it up if needed.

if i could find my tree climber's companion book i could tell you for sure how many twists it says to have, but i believe that its a min of 6 spread out for the circumference of the log.

define faster , please , a second , two , minute ? four twists is plenty , six is for the paranoid and anymore than that tie another knot . The first two wraps are going to be pinched , thats why I prefer the cow hitch on trunk lowering because that pinch damages your sling on heavy logs. I've only seen it come untied when people tie it loose , one time this guy tied it on a block on a tree to redirect to his pick up to pull the log over , it wasn't tied directional to his truck , you got it , busted grill (truck) . I'm going to tie them both today , and time them . I'll be back .

i looked it up i thought maybe you messing with me. thats not it. what i am describeing is a running bowline but i go twice around before going back through loop. it works well some guys i know mess with their knot it has to be set just right etc. mine i just tie and let it go. thanks for the input.

not being funny here,

So your saying the rabbit goes around the tree twice, and then back in the hole? I'm tring to picture this and tie so's I can see it.

Hmm.... not quite sure what you mean, you take a wrap around the running part?

oh boy let me know. i always used more twists. it never failed me yet. i mostly use them for attaching a porta wrap or ropealong to the base of a tree.

let me try this. ok you go around tree or piece start with a loop (9)go around the running part then through loop then around knot side of rope right above the loop then i go around it again same way then finish by going through loop. if that make sense.it would be easier if you had rope in hand

ive never seen it or anybody else do it. we had a old rope one day and they were using like a chain to pull pieces with a loader from over a embankment there running bowline kept tightening up. so i tried this just to try and get it not to tighten up and it worked. let me see if i can have wife video me .

You dress it different but I still think that's called a jacked bowline.

Yep, I've used it mainly when I know I'm going to put a lot of load on the knot. It unties easier.

Thanks for going through the trouble to get that to us.

holy sh...
you just blew my mind thats the way it was taught to me rabbit in hole and around tree i was gonna explain that way. i thought you guys would bust my a$$ to no end for that little rabbit thing man thats weird. i still teach it that way today its funny to watch somebody new saying that to themselves when they are trying to remember hahahaha!!
