This is the Akimbo

Akimbo already has enough going on! Keep it as simple as it can be. Color? Color hue changes to tell you hardware temps on fast rappels, for night climbs it also talks to you, "Slow down buddy yer rope's burning up!" That's easy right? ;-)

I've thought about the swivel. I've also thought about an o-ring inside the anchor to hold carabiners snug. The swivel should be very easy to fit aftermarket with a simple bushing in the anchor hole and a shackle style swivel. The 0-ring could be removed for that to work (if in fact there ends up being an 0-ring. A rubber bushing a la dmm works too).

I'd be happy to clip an oval biner from my bridge swivel to the Akimbo, it has such short vertical extension, not a problem chaining things up.

I'll treasure this early version...

Going to be hard not to just make an oak/glass case for it (bullet proof glass and the oak will be veneer over 1" thick steel) and set it on the mantle. Glad I'm not a collector of such things... think the smiles from using it will be bigger than the smiles from looking at it.

It's been fun watching this whole project develop over time. Nice to see it easing into the final stages.

Jamie has done an incredible job moving this project along. I can't believe how quickly he has gotten to this point. I remember, not too long ago, seeing Jamie's video on the quick link redirect and noticing this incredibly stylish climbing device he was using. He hardly mentioned the Akimbo as all the focus was on the redirect he was demonstrating. What? Akimbo, Akimbo, Akimbo!

The reaction to that video was priceless. What is that thing? Show me more!

Unfortunately I didn't find out about the gofundme campaign until it was closed and I'll have to wait for the RE version. I'll be the guy jealously smoking a cigarette giving all the 1st gen Akimbo owners the stink eye. o_O

Would be very intrested to see it with a main spine with a slightly offset attachment point for a caribiner at the top for a cleaner DbRT, keeping the second tie in point out of the way of operations.

How do i try one?

Hey, @Koda7225, welcome to the TreeBuzz forum. Congratulations on making your first post, also.

No disrespect intended at all with what I'm about to say. I think if you haven't already done it, you should go back and read the entirety of this thread, and possibly the similar thread on the TreeHouse forum.

Jaime Merritt has been sweating bullets over the design of this device for a very long time. I think the design phase is over with now, and things are moving in the direction of mass production by one of the best climbing gear companies on the planet. I'm not sure how long it will take for it to become available to the general public, but when it is ready, I think it will be one of the most beautiful devices in the marketplace.

There may be changes to the device over time, but I suspect that any further modifications will be slow in coming, because Jaime has put so much thought into the Akimbo that it is likely nearly perfect already.

Those are my thoughts on this. Again, no offense intended.

Tim

Jamie and I were just talking today about some of the subtle tweaks. I can tell you he is really making sure this thing kicks ass. The amount of friction control based on the variable eccentrics is great and repeatable. I have it dialed in on 4 different ropes with varying construction and diameters and wrote the settings down. Now no matter which rope I choose I just reset the eccentrics and go to town. It is so adjustable that the pressure to release the device is almost impossible to distinguish between my ropes. Jamie is doing one hell of a job with the Akimbo.

Ok, @monkeylove I need you to test it on KM III MAX, any of the 11.7 Yale ropes, any of the 11.5 All Gear ropes, any 1/2" 16-strand, and... oh, I bought some 1/2" KM III too. There's no hurry, man... take all day if you want to. ;)
