silky sugoi users?

i just ordered one from wesspur after years of using a corona quicksaw. today i just felt i was ready to move up to something a bit more professional.
i tried my buddies sugoi last week and wondered why all the handsaws i have used in the past dont cut as fast as this one does. ok so i heard a few things about the scabbard and it breaking. are there any mods you can do to make it last longer?

I've never heard of a scabbard breaking. the scabbard on my Zubat is going on its 4 or 5th new blade.

I think that if someone broke a scabbard they are to blame not the scabbard. They're built tough but not indestructible.

the plasic dosen't like impact on cold days. my'n is 4 years old, I just replaced the black part with Purple heart. Just dont abuse her and she will be sweet to you, and and and... my first blade is 6 years old I sharpen it my self. it dosent see yaer round use here in the northwest.

Mine broke one winter day at about one year old. I've been using an old leather scabbard ever since.

The little Fastex buckle tends to pop out sometimes. I've got wo of the scabbards and they haven't broken... it doesn't get brittle cold here very often though.

Blinky,

The plastic buckles aren't made by Fastex.

I've replaced buckles on various things with real Fastex buckles that I've scrounged off of old gear. They work, the copies aren't as reliable.

The saw's pretty blunt; much less touch than the zubat. i like the ibuki better for big wood, so the 200t can stay on the ground. like dan i went to a leather scabbard, not because it broke (i usually stay in on cold mornings) but because leather grabs better. Plastic encases the tool, leather embraces the tool.

i was tempted to get a zubat but with the smaller teeth all i could think about is it clogging up on me. the larger teether dont clog as often when pruning palms. hmmm i might just have to get both and use one for smaller stuff and one for larger stuff.

I've said it before, but I'll repeat. I use both-a Zubat Gorilla taped to the sugoi scabbard. I'd like a sawpod, I've got the older style sugoi scabbard (no velcro, just rings) but I can't find a place to ship a sawpod where the shipping isn't half of the price.

Dude, it really doesn't matter what silky saw you buy, any will be better than a corona. I own a zubat, sugoi, tsurugi, and a pocket boy and all of them have there applications.

Hey Luke,
You sharpen your own blades. I was wondering about that. I saw files for sale on ebay. Where did you buy your file. Is it difficult? I'd love to hear more on this topic. Thanks

O

Try using a flat chainsaw file for this. All you're doing is following the tooth tip angle as best you can (sometimes counting strokes) until you see a nice sharp point again. It isn't hard to get the hang of with a little practice. Use the thumbnail of the hand supporting the blade as a guide for the smooth edge on the side of the saw file.

Some Silky blades don't seem to take well to filing, but both my Sugois have been easy to do, and well worth the effort.

Good luck!

If I am correct a Sugoi blade is composed of a steel that will except a feather file. Thomas has a nice video out there showing how to sharpen a Sugoi. I'm almost positive that zubats are NOT intended to be re-sharpened.

Thanks for the advice. I should have known it was that simple. I've got a Samarai for the time being. Still building up my tool kit.
Peace
O

Here are the facts the sugoi can be sharpened , but the Zubat cannot ( I have both ). For Palms which I do a fair bit the sugoi works like a dream because the blade is more agressive and thicker in the kerf. Slices them fronds like butter. I have reduced the blade on the sugoi to 13" like the zubat as I found that I did not like the excess length or need the useless vine cutter. Living down here vines are a reality and when I encounter them they need more blade than tip believe me. You can look in an earlier post i made for pics of all the mods I made on both saws to work in my environment. Not necessary for all users. Modified the scabbard too for a more low profile feel. clean all saws after using for palms, very important.

I'm going to make the effort to sharpen my Sugoi when it is dull.

Does anyone know if an Ibuki can be sharpened? That's an expensive blade I don't want to replace.

Hey Frax the Ibuki can be sharpened its just chrome plated, not hardened. Look at Wesspur's web site it should point ya in the right direction.
