silky sugoi users?

I'm going to make the effort to sharpen my Sugoi when it is dull.

Does anyone know if an Ibuki can be sharpened? That's an expensive blade I don't want to replace.

Here is the baileys link for the silky file, its shape is designed for the saws and works great. yes the Ibuki can be sharpened with a file because impulse-hardening is not applied. There is also a great video on youtube for the proper technique/procedure to follow for sharpening

i got it in the mail today! i did a side by side comparison in about a 4" dried mango wood log and HOLY SMOKES what have i been missing all these year? i mean in all seriousness, this thing cut those logs like they were not even there! 6 strokes and right through it went while the corona was at least 12. damn thing is soo sharp im gonna have to be even more careful of where my handsaw is when im pruning.

Love my sugoi...shorter blade and scabbard would be nice as im only 5'8".

Hey Isaiah her is a pic of my Zubat and Sugoi. I have modded them both, the zubat blade slightly and the sugoi is the identical shape of the zubat. Both are 13 inches and the vine cutters are removed because down here when we encounter vines which can be quite often you need the blade not a puny vine cutter tip. Look closely and you will see that I cut off the hook on the sugoi handle because it was forever hooking on stuff and going to the ground. The scabbard has been shortened with a hacksaw both sides and the fastex for putting it on the saddle removed. Only use it on calf. Same aggressive cutting from the sugoi only a more balanced shorter blade. I love them both and they both have their specific uses.

hey swing what did you use to shorten the blade..dont want to try something and fudge it up..as the blades are expensive to replace

If you are not good with grinders and cutting tools I would take it to a machine shop. But there is a prob if you dont have the zubat because that is what I used as a template. The shape and length of the zubat is so balanced. However I used a makita grinder ( small ) with a thin grinding blade narrow kerf ( 4" dia ). You have to hold the blade alone ( no handle ) with a large vice grip and cut the excess away with the grinding blade. Wear safety glasses and gloves please. Cut nice and slow letting the grinder do the work same as when using a chainsaw. Easy peasy . Trust me you will like the shortened blade a heap especially in congested crowns.

swingdude, i used my new sugoi in a few coconut trees at our house today and man, that hook part was nice to slice out the paper. dude this saw is sweeet! you know how when your cutting the fronds you get that issue with the teeth plugging up? i had no such issue with it plugging up and i didnt even have to support each frond that i cut. it just glided right through and cut faster then the frond could split. i even cut the seed pods out with a frond at the same time! what a dream this thing is!

Josh welcome to the silky club, you won't be disappointed, that saw is a palm frond killa, I used to use handsaws made by stihl at first and believe me that's like chalk and cheese. I do coconut and royal palm removals, taking of all fronds and fruit ( seeds ) before blocking of the heads and stem. The sugoi makes easy work of that then the chainsaws make a mess of the rest. Clean that baby after every use and the blade should stay sharp awile.
