Show off them splices

Have you done anything else with the V12?

[/ QUOTE ]

Replace the cores of different covers, its very light and a superb rope.

Make just about everything out of it.

I also have a personal rig pinto with bare v12, not for the faint hearted :)

The pulley saver on my avatar has the core replaced to, puts it a near 40kn.

Spliced a microfrog. Vectran, kong futura, thimble and a 9" piece of tubular webbing.

Spent a good deal of time getting lengths of sections just right by using and adjusting 8mm cord tied with knots, shifting lengths around before I sliced it based on the tied 8mm piece. It is tiny all spliced up as one piece.

13' initial length.
31"ascender eye to saddle tether eye
20" down from ascender eye, branches off to 11" saddle tether
62" from ascender eye to where whoopie end returns into body.

Eyes stitched and also where tether brummel branches out.

Haven't climbed it yet, what do you slicing gurus think?

I certainly wouldn't trust my life on a Futura. The cam lock us not substantial enough and they have the potential to slip. It's a great ascender but not for life support.

Appreciate the safety concern. It is an ascender, petzl croll on saddle, or when working SRT im using rope wrench. pantin footie.

Is there a recall on the kong futura? Any safety concern I should be aware of? Other than normal concerns of a toothed ascender?

Nick, you've been doing this for a while. Any comments on the splicing? Do you recommend any particular ascender? I like the compact Futura as an ascender.

I had it and have been using it frogwalker. I saw the joe Harris vid on microfrog, so I just eyeball dimensioned it based on my liking.
Was not too difficult to figure out how to splice it.

ive had a futura for 2 years and not had any issues. i fully rate it is a life support. you just have to remember its minimalist..

There arent any recalls or accidents associated with the Futura. It is according to KONG rated for life support. For me, without a retention hole for a biner to keep the rope in, and the propensity it has to sometimes slip without grabbing I just wouldnt use it for life support.

I am a big fan of the device though and made some modifications that (recommended by a friend) that make a big difference and really set it apart from other options.

With the modifications it is definitely NOT life support but its much more functional now.

Here is a video:

Used in the micro-frog setup it's really only functioning as life support for the changeover out of the system, at which point it is much less likely to slip or fail as there's not much movement. Even then, there are ways to back it up for the changeover, if you're really too concerned about it. Otherwise, it's fairly redundant due to the chest and foot ascenders- you wouldn't even really fall if the ascender flew off the line due to the croll.

P.S. Looks good Lemonjello. Very clean.

Thanks fellas! Splicing bug gets ya when you finally "get it". I've spliced glider tow line many years ago and have played with eye splices on 3 strand truck tie down rope. Got myself some fids, Samson guide and off cuts of double braid and 12 strand about a year ago. Watched some videos and built some whoopies and amsteel slings first to build some confidence.

I really enjoy it! A little side hobby that is pretty useful. I've done splice work for a few boaters who really understand splices are the way to go for clean, uncluttered and easy to inspect work.

I believe DBT is one of the brains behind the microfrog if I'm not mistaken. Was too tempting not to try, hope I didn't offend by building it.

Did a backyard climb with it yesterday and I gotta say, slick!! Lightweight and not bulky at all. Thin rope on the footloot maybe could be improved a bit. I do believe I got the lengths right for me. I subbed ZK2 for the croll and drive R hand/R foot up on ascender, then the L pantin, driving up the hitch and ZK2 with L hand as I go. Takes a bit of coordination at first but it climbs smooth and easy.

Hey Lemon, no its just the tail for adjustment from the upper acsender. I don't use a back up to my bridge anymore after reading and listening to what cam ascenders are potentially capable of when shock loaded. I ascend on a RW or HH using a reliable hitch. If I miss a step the hitch will grab me.
If I wanted a back up I'd use a croll on a chest rig and not rely on a tether and hand ascender.
It works for me until I see something better.

Cheers

I rebuilt my PBRW (PorkBrick RopeWalker)... I had it done up with tied webbing but decided to reduce the bulk.

I had a scrapped 10mm OP splice so I did up the other side to make a foot loop. I didnt make any measurements or follow the directions, I just eye balled it all and it worked perfectly. It was actually kind of freeing to do the splice without measuring anything. I figured since it was just a footloop it didnt matter.

For the eye2eye connecting the Croll to the footloop I made sure to use spec splices incase it ever got used as a harness tether for life support or anything. As usual I forgot to insert the Croll into the eye until I was halfway through the tuck (everytime I have used a captive thimble or ring!!).

The hand loop is 4mm(?) Spectra hand stitched into a girth loop (with a half twist) then girthed onto the Croll.

Overall it reduces the bulk and looks great. Two big advantages of using a small eye2eye as a footloop are it stows easier since it can hang flat and secondly you can remove it easily by just unclipping one side, you dont need to wrestle it on or off your boot yet it is tight as can be. I used a running lockstitch to group the cordura up and anchor it to the loop.

On a side note I also put some luxury touches on my climbing line. I dont prefer a large eye, but considering that a large eye is free and a tight eye wasnt available for some reason, beggars cant be choosers.

*excuse the poor photos, I used my cell phone not the DSLR.
