Should 80' oaks be cut down?

leaner reduce.webp

These pics of failed codoms and rotted roots are even farther from the point than vet's curious obsession with SZ's "gear". (SZ that was the best retort he had. That mere huckster's verbal dueling is as limited as his company's services.)
And OOOOOOO the tree moves when the wind blows, what if..., what if...--a classic Chicken Little risk assessment!
I don't know how one sleeps after forgetting about arboriculture,
feeding people's most irrational fears,
bending them over with smoke and mirrors,
and raping their assets.

Back to leaning trees...here's one that leans toward the house (lower left) that I, by my bookish self, will reduce 30-40% and monitor. :cachetada:
No real fan of Alex Shigo discounts the power of CODIT, and other tree responses.

Really now.....Ass rape in the name of Arboriculture

AssETS was my point--from adultery to sodomy, how low can you and vet take this thread? :buitre:

Just got a call to prune a leaning red oak. Here's the tele-estimate; i told em 3-5 crew hours, depending on volume of work specified, cleanup, etc.

CODIT is awesome.
As are microbursts and straight line winds and ice storms. Events not infrequent in this part of the world.
Client wants a tree gone; it gets gone.

The continued existence of your trees is the tree preservationist's overriding concern; not your family, or your home.

This seems unfair, unless no one here is a "preservationist." Guymayor's professional reputation is at least at stake in giving such assessments. That it itself is likely a greater concern to him than the preservation of two or three particular trees.

Anyone yet asked about Guymayor's track record? Has following his advice ever ended in catastrophe? What are the stats there?

https://meeting.psu.edu/p94y60hp9zi/ has many case studies, with hollow trees over US highways, etc. Many more presented on website. btw the webinar presents contributions from the UK properly attributed, and within its self-limited context, defined in large part by intentional wounding for bugs and crud.

Where's the track record of removal-first contractors? In our deforested cities.

None lost yet, but I don't own the trees or the primary responsibility; that's on the owner.

From sodomy to slander, this thread's taken an uptick! I think you mean Cheech and Chong, ben old chap. If you want to feel smart by slandering, might as well get it right!
And I got nothing in common with that cat. But you're close; Mr. Natural and Flakey Foont were early inspirations for tree teams like Mike O'Ryza and Perry Enkema, and also DDendro and Codit.

"Mr. Natural sez, Use the right tool for the job" — spoken on seeing Flakey Foont unloading a truck full of bowling balls with a pitchfork. Asked, "What does it all mean?", he responds, "Don't mean sheeit..."

Slander Guy is spoken, while Libel is the published word. They both come under Defamation, for example.
You accuse me of slander, clearly neither possible or true, that is libel.
Smart no....just educated.

Thanks Rope. O yea, science...I think 47 references were quoted in the webinar, and 70+ cited.
That's got to count for something. ;) arararar

If there's a problem accessing any of these sources, or questions about their use, please request clarification. You might not get it but hey it's worth a try!

since when is a difference in opinions straight up right or wrong. guy i dig the stuff you have to say, but man the way you say it makes me not want to ever side with you.
whats wrong with, "hey understand your stance, but this is mine."? this is similar to playing basketball with a bunch of old guys. one guy says "Foul!" when he drives recklessly to the hoop and now the games over.
some of your old birds make it hard for me to dig thru your BS to read the words of actual substance. what a drag...

This is a struggle. I do look for the good in approaches taken by others, and promote them when I see them. Many examples in the webinar. Last article complimented the work of Barrell and Fay and Percival, for example. All Brits, but Brits and Germans know a lot more about old trees, of course. I hope the resistance to European approaches is not some kind of patriotism.

Facts are usually straight up right or wrong though. I'm the opposite of reckless--I go through a lot of reckoning before voicing an opinion, to make sure it's defendable. But yeah some more softening might make the the opinions more palatable. I used to be much worse!

But too much softening or dancing around the points can diminish the actual substance.
And, when the responses dig in to defend the marketing strategy of confusing and scaring people, what else to do but dig in on the side of interpreting the tree?
And, when the responses get out and out abusive, I can handle that, but it's hard to re-elevate the discussion with a lack of thoughtful feedback to peg it to. The game's over if only one person is playing.

"some of your old birds make it hard for me to dig thru your BS to read the words of actual substance. what a drag..."

The only birds I got are 3 hens and one rooster. ??? It would help greatly to understand if you would just identify what looks like BS and what looks like useful substance. pm, phone, post, whatever.

Guy, re. the defence of "...the marketing strategy of confusing and scaring people", I'm wondering why Ed Hayes "Evaluating Tree Defects", p.3 mentions that an excessive lean of 30-40* and a target, represents a tree with a high risk of failure?
Is this fear mongering? A meaningless guideline? A marketing strategy?
I'm sure that you have encountered (and can cite examples ad nauseum) of trees with 45 or 50* leans that haven't crunched any structures (yet).
In the case of dear Jessica's oaks, a 30* lean towards the house was mentioned......
