RopeTek Helmet Intercom System

they claim to be water resistant but I know guys in the NW who use them all day in the rain and no problems. Figure they are designed to be mounted on the side of a motorcycle helmet doing say 60-70 in the rain so they should be good on an arb hat !!

We recently had a mic go really quiet, I'm gonna get it replaced, groundie thought it might've been water damage...

Otherwise they've been awesome. Mic is an easy fix though. Replacement mount plate with speakers and mic is <$40.

Evan, sure you checked already but the mic is directional, if it is facing the wrong way it will cancel out your voice. Sena are also really good about warrantee they will replace the mic if you send it back to them, only problem is you will be without it for a week. Also check the connection near the control unit.

Just ordered a pair of the Senas on ebay. Good deal, too at $225.

Anyone else mount their own? If so, any pointers you want to give? I plan on cleaning the inside of the Vertex Best helmets I have before mounting the speaker pads, and mounting one set directly in there. The other set will be inside muffs.

Does that sound like a good plan? Are they loud enough to transmit through the earplugs on the helmet mounted set?

I've not used bluetooth stuff before - will I be able to listen to music on my smartphone and still have a conversation with my groundie, all hands-free? This seems tgtbt.

Thanks for any info.

We mounted ours on some Petzls. They work fine but I think the systems fit kasks better. The ear muffs won't fold back all the way; there isn't enough room for the unit. It's not a big deal though. Make sure you plan out the wires and speaker well. My older plain vertex had a better spot for the mic than my climbers vertex vent did. His mic rides right by his cheek but the sound is still great.

Has anyone tried to mount the smaller mic to the forehead portion of the helmet?

Winch, hope you got the version with the "Universal Mikes" or else you will not be happy with the results. Doubt you did for the price you paid, if you did then you got a smoking deal!!

Yes return them. They are designed to be mounted on the side of the helmet which we cannot do as our muffs are there. You need the SMH 10D-11s

I would have just bought the components and installed them, but when I added it all up it was so close to what Paul was asking it wasnt worth it.

If I messed anything up or broke anything it would have been a huge loss money wise. Additionally, the way I see it, if I installed them in a even slightly less than optimal way the money I saved would have been for nothing.

I havent had any issues with the set I got through Paul. The muffs articulate, the wiring is fine and the mounts are out of the way. Im glad I was able to take advantage of what Paul learned from installing so many sets.

I wasnt interested in the kasks, having two other new helmets already in my possession. Thats all, not saying Paul's deal isnt a good one. Quite to the contrary, apparently. Might try mounting mine a little different anyway, considering my use of earplugs instead of muffs.

these things are awesome! have never had headsets only when working with a crane 5x a yr or so. we have had them for about a month and they have worked flawlessly until yesterday. we run a 3 man crew so we have 3 helmets paired up. one guy was out sick so we had 2 of the helmets. I could hear him but he couldnt hear me. we tried repairing them and rebooting but couldnt figure it out. ill check my connections and c if the mike got turned? any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! never realized how greatful i am for these until they dont work. these are the bees knees.

Kieran

sweet deal these will def be my next purchase. ive been saying we need these on our crews for a while now but management wouldn't pay the 2500.00 price tag for the ones our crane crew uses for bucket crews, but safety is their number one concern cough cough

This is a great system, just to play the devils (not the hockey team Mark) advocate, does a system that allows you to answer your phone and play music have a place in a rigging and rope running senario ? From a safety stand point there are enough things to distract you in the tree world on any given day ! How do we draw the line between Tool and Toy.

We don't do the phone calls and jammin out. Too many other more important things to think about.

I agree 100%.But having the option is nice. I quite often go to another part of the property while Im not needed to make calls. this wouold work nice for that.

Has anyone tried the Sena SMH10R (http://senabluetooth.com/product/intercoms/smh10r/). Looks like a smaller lighter unit with the same functionality. I've read some places that having the boom mic near your mouth isn't necessary. Could you mount the mic on the visor of a helmet and still have good audio?

I'm thinking of trying to keep the whole unit inside the helmet, out of the elements, with no exposed wires--possibly on a Pfanner Protos.
