Rope Wrench Feedback?

I imagine a ropeguideesque configuration would work too. although I have not tried it. That yellow one CS is like a 2 footer I think.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why do you have to use a rigging plate? Could you use a beefier knot like a figure eight on a bight and lock it with a biner? What's the safety issue that you guys are preventing by using the rigging plate?

I tried logging in earlier today from work to ask the very same question so.... ditto! Couldn't you just clip a carabiner through one of the alpine butterflies and that could act as a back-up to prevent the b-flies pulling through? Perhaps we're not seeing something here, thanks.

But I like it, I'm not a huge fan of all the bounce in the system when it's base-tied, particularly with the 1/2" arbormaster lines I use most regularly.

Thanks,
Russell

I guess you wouldnt need to but i feel like a knot would get jammed into the cambium saver. The holes on the rigging plate are about the same diameter as the rope

plus I'm thinking that the way the plate lies flat against the ring, it disperses pressure nice and even, makes for a good, solid anchor that comes out easy.

probably a nice sollution would be to make the cambium saver with a rigging plate and then a larger ring. The ring could be the small ring or even the DMM thimble. Just bigger enough than the hole on the rigging plate. The rigging plate could be a lot smaller as well.

I have not really been able to find info on hanging off of stopper knots. dangers? It seems a little strange but then it also seems quite a natural thing to do. A few break tests would be good.

The smaller profile SRT ring to ring would be would be harder to istall from the ground

That's a good reason, the knot getting stuck in the small ring, thanks.

By the way, it was great to meet you in Parramatta in July Kevin. I know you have stirred up the the SRT talk even more around these parts, and for good reason, awesome tool you have created.

Oh and of course, Go The Kiwis!

Just got a rope wrench for my birthday, looking forward to tomorrow to try it out. Decided to give it a try as a non-mechanical option for SRT, ascenders give me the willies.

One question, if the tool isn't for personal support, isn't it a little overbuilt? Maybe the sideplates could be perforated to reduce weight on later versions.

Kevin there should be no problem with climbing off a jamming knot. Isnt that what everyone is climbing off of on a treemotion rope bridge?
I've used this a couple times now. Really like it when your doing a lot of cutting and the main stem. Really nice for evergreens. Or when working a tree with someone else. This way there is no risk of them accidentally severing you standing end.
Only thing I don't like is that it adds more hardwear into a simple system but I feel it has it's place. It can be made very efficient but can be over complicated to the point of inefficiency.

Oh and I just run an alpine butterfly with a biner that also captures the rope.'no problems and not worried about it at all. Saying that though you should always make sure you sit into the system where you can see and visually inspect that it is set right and holding.

Glad you brought this back up. I think the technique is niffty seeing as how I like to switch back and forth from SRT to DdRT. This technique and the pin to make the RW mid-line attachable, or mid-climb removable, is going to bring some new styles to light.

Picked up a RW here at PNW-ISA Annual Training Conference in Coeur d'Alane yesterday. Looking forward to trying it out.

I've been using a wooden rope wrench, but wanted to support Kevin for the innovation and added productivity to my day.

Looking forward to trying it out Thursday

Lovin it!

Lent out my original uni to someone waiting on a rock exotica recall inspection. Did some "product testing" today, which really means took down a big Mountain Ash no-one else wanted to climb!

Ascended & worked down a big spar today and it worked a treat. To go up on the one system then just work your way down felling out 6-8m chunks at a time, retrieving the choked SRT line as you go. Just felt like a really good application for it - one of many!

I got mine saturday. I broke it out to adjust the bars today and found a huge problem!!!!!!! I have a tight eye spliced on both ends of every climbing line I have. They dont fit through the bars. I can't use it! What a dissapointment for the dinero I shelled out for it. Anybody have any safe mods to make it work. I saw something about replacing the bottom bar with a self locking pin. How do you all feel about that? Would like to get it working for cheap as I can. I don't need another expensive paperweight.
