Probably a waste of time?

Agreed. Not a major knock as I'm the F bomb user but not in a professional letter to a peer.

Right, that would be the time you would want to be the most professional. Isn't is interesting that so many people just don't get it. Its not about the tree your cutting down for X amount of money....Its about so much more that actually gets you the work and secures you the work.

There will always be the guy in the pickup truck who will be cheap. I know this because i was the guy in the truck when I first started. I have thought of everything possible to way to get all the local tree companies to come together and get on the same page . The problem is half of the tree companies in florida and im gonna say everywhere that tree guys quote jobs based off how financially stable they are that week ( Rent is due or owe there drug dealer ) and so on. I have found that once you achieve a good name and large fleet of equipment that alone throws the cheap guys out of the picture . My recommendation would be to build your business around being debt free with everything associated with your business that way you can pick and choose your jobs and not worry about the smalls things like :a cheaper guy.

we also have several documents to give the consumer to help separate up from the rest heres one of them , feel free to share .

Hey, advancetreepros! Nice post! I know you've been a member here for longer than I have, but this might be the first time I've read anything of yours. So, welcome to the TreeBuzz forum!

I can tell by the avatar photo and what you've just posted here that you have a lot to contribute. Please hang around and feel free to post more often. I think you'll like it here.

Sort of how pharmaceutical, airline, internet, finance, health insurance, cell phone industries currently operate in the US.

Exactly. But, adopting their methods is a bad idea for two reasons. The first is that it's wrong (and a bad idea) to stoop to their level, and second, most of us don't have the monetary funds and assets to hire enough legal staff to keep the long arm of the law at bay, or to pay high-dollar lobbyists to corrupt the process enough to make it look like our criminal enterprises are just doing the working man a favor. The broke ass dope dealer on the corner gets 25 years, the CEO of Big Pharma gets a bonus for the same activity. :(

Mmmmm..... In with the original plan. Just cc that email to every existing tree service in your area, everyone set a bottom number, then burn everyone in town with shotty tree care at the same price. Would certainly level the playing field. If anyone is better then the anyone else, we'll just dumb down their skill.

Try not to take my playful sarcasm too personal as I laughed and wrote this while taking a morning dump while my nuisance dog wouldn t stop licking my knee cap.

Or, an alternative way to put some coin in yer pocket:
1."invent" a product. (doesn't matter if you take someone else's widely known proven concept that has been around for a long time)
2.Patent it. Gotta get that patent. This is crucial.
3.Stifle competition via threat of litigation.
4.Pretend you are really just a nice guy.

I think I would find it difficult to take a dump with the dog licking my knee cap the whole time......props

Dude it's always either the dog, the cat, my two year old, or my five year old trying to hang out while I'm trying to cleanse myself of yesterday's poor choices.
But I'm a multi tasker. If I lived alone I bet I could drink coffee, read the buzz, and relieve myself. And if I get time maybe smoke a butt.

Also, just because your the lowest price on a job doesn't mean your a hack. If i was in your marker I would tell you to go pound sand. Why would I co-operate with my competition to help build a price structure that benefits them? This is what the game is all about.
We do mostly removals. Often I can do two to three jobs a day with my crew and equipment, this year will be even better because we have spent a lot of time streamlining things. So you look at a job and price it for 2K. Thats going to take you all day. I price that job at 1600-1800 because that is one of three jobs for me that day....I don't think of myself as a hack. There are many ways to look at this and getting all your competition together to raise the prices is not going to work. There will always be the lowest bidder. Sometimes it will be you and sometimes it will not. The trick is to not always be the lowest bidder but still get the job, and when you are the lowest bidder still pull in a 10-20% profit on the job.

Well said Royce. As a supplier of contractors, we typically lose a portion of our team each year to our clients or they branch out on their own, as I once did. We supply the resources and training, and reimburse our team for the costs associated with various credentials. When they depart it hurts, momentarily, because we lose a great employee we've invested in. They get to take their knowledge with them, obviously. I had to change my outlook and see it as helping to place professionals into our industry, creating alliances in the long run, and hopefully driving up what we can collectively bill more over time by increasing the level of professionalism across the board. Getting involved and educated on both the art & science and the business is where its at. I was once a guy in a truck with credentials and a saddle. I've also known a great many of people in numerous industries who started on the low rungs of the ladder. Grit and determination coupled with a vision are what makes someone succeed, not collusion or riding on coattails. Research dorm startups and other people who broke out and made a successful run-they really didn't typically get all the competition together and talk rates. I'm with Royce, why would I share my business intelligence with my competition, who knows when the next business comes in and wants no part of the pseudo-alliance, where does that leave us?

The standards we are setting and following are making improvements. Tree topping for example is a practice I feel is being frowned upon now by the typical client because of the message we've collectively relayed. Sadly, there are those who will readily do poor work for a low rate, leave them to wither on the vine, many do. A solid sales and marketing campaign can elevate your company, certified, insured, competent. Those messages and practices will bring in the repeat clientele that wants excellent service. There will always be the cutthroat in your neighborhood, and the competition with the most equipment and high rates. Be where your feet are, be yourself, better yourself, extreme ownership.
