Pick in climbing rope

Hey y'all,

Got a new Samson vortex a couple months ago and have a minor pick on the outside. I'm wondering what you're supposed to do - cut it off, burn it off, leave it be. Thanks!

I'll start off with.... I'm a noob but I did the same thing to my vortex and at the TCIA conference the dude at Samson booth handed me a brochure with rope inspection criteria complete with examples/pics. At work now so I don't have access but might be on their website? He said as long as it was one strand it was ok but don't take my word. Email Samson to get copy of their tech sheet

I wouldn't worry about that at all. I agree with @rockettree no fire. I'd leave it well enough alone. BUT, in saying that.. it's your life on the line. If you're second guessing it, cut it out and give yourself the peace of mind.

That's not too bad. I had a bad one though that I climbed on for about 5 months and every time I was ascending past it at about 50 feet it looked ten times worse and I was always nervous on it. I don't think you need to in this case but if it's making you nervous and off your game in the tree just replace it. Peace of mind is worth every penny

Their rope inspection guide is baller.

That stuff is so soft and supple it picks like a sonuvabitch.

That one doesn't look too bad. I'd probably snip it. Well...I'd probably burn it, but I don't want to upset the apple cart here

I leave the picks on mine as they are, so they're easily inspected, noticed, and not forgotten. Not going to say one way or the other about still climbing on it. I know what I'd do, and it wouldn't be climbing a different length rope tomorrow.

Nail clippers. Works on stuff like that every time.

Having said that. Be especially mindful of changes in diameter. If the pick is enough to change the diameter, cut and move on.

Same thing happened to my Vortex line...I've only had it a short while too!
I still feel safe climbing on it though. The colour has also faded really fast...not to mention the pig tailing....and the stretch ....not complaining, just sayin'...I do love the tensile on this line! Has great hand too!

Well...it's not my "go to" rope....IMORI WA ICHI BAN!

I'm with you, not a big vortex fan
