Phoenix Palm

Wowzers lol this should be fun, I think we are going to brush out the fronds some other way than climbing it, so woohoo.

I think I will spray myself in raid before I climb, instant death to all bugs, then i will have skin poisoning from raid lol jk.

Thanks again guys for your thoughts!!

Tyvex suit over cloths might be a comforting idea for sealing out bugs. Shouldn't be in the tree too long before you can come down and strip it off. I wear those when I have to climb through poison oak.

I hate date palms almost as much as cockroaches eeegghhww! And when the fly uugh so nasty. Lots of date palmes in san diego... Like Ben said, the head carries ALOT of weight. The spines can be crippling if they get you right, best of luck, you got this!

I made the mistake of not giving the fronds their due respect once, took a spiny spike into the top of my leg for that lapse of judgment. I came down out of the tree to retrieve my pocket knife so I could pull it out and promptly fell flat on my face. Turns out the leg muscles slide back and forth over one another to function and this inch and a half long spike had pinned them together.

By the time I got to the truck and pulled my pants down I couldn't see it, it had turned clear. I could feel it but not get enough grip on its edges with a single blade. Trip to the doctor got it out.

Ouch. I watched a tree service cleaning up storm damage on the Gulf of Mexico back in the 70's and when they got to an uprooted date palm, their whole demeanor changed. Not a one in the bunch wanted to be there. They slowed down and took their time with it, and loaded it all into a trailer. Never even started the chipper back up. It was pretty hot out, but they all wore two pair of gloves and long sleeved shirts. There was a lot of swearing. I've never had any desire to mess with those things. Luckily, in Nebraska, that's not a problem!

Trimmed up a Phoenix reclinata today, got this one spike above my palm, entire finger feels super arthritic [emoji37][emoji35][emoji35]

lol you guys are cracking me up. Die bugs die is the theme for palms i see lol

I will definitely take into account the spikes they sounds worse than they look.
