I think the idea is to design the tooth and wheel around what it's meant to cut-Wood.. not rock. Designing a cutter system around the basis of "If i hit rock" does not sound like the way to go.
There will always be those times you do bump into some rock but rarely enough to knock the entire carbide tip off the tooth. One of the last things i want is a set of high dollar teeth to do is sheer off when it hits a bit of rock. They build these grinders stout for a reason; they are meant to take a beating. Why deal w/ mediocre cutting speed by going to a cheap/junk tooth?

Well

I have had both 1/2" teeth in pockets like shown on that wheel and Rayco super teeth. I can say that the Rayco teeth way out perform the other.

You really dont want things to "give way", you want them to work and keep cutting. My machine used to bend and break a lot of those 1/2" teeth, now bugger all happens, I just grind away.

Same here Ekka, I replaced the teeth on my Carlton 7200 last year with Rayco super teeth and I have yet to break a tooth. I was breaking the Carlton teeth on a reg basis.

Thats possibly why carlton have done a deal to fit their machines with the new sandvik duradisc. THAT looks very good - and I've heard good things about it too....
