I'm an advocate for child labor!

I\'m an advocate for child labor!

I just moved into a new place with my girlfriend and it needs alot of tree and yard work. I cut down a 25ft stub of a walnut that the utility company had hacked up. I was moving the logs to the edge of the creek as a barrier for the kids. My GF's two year old Jayden was yelling at me from the porch so I had her put his shoes on. I put him to work carrying the brush (a small armful for a man) to the burn pile. Took him about 10 trips. Boy made me proud as he is usaually playing with his twin's babydolls. I yelled into the house afterwards,"Get this man a beer he worked hard." My GF brought his sippy cup of juice and he sucked it down like he just ran across the Sahara.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

A friend of mine has a 9 year old son. He has been doing tree work with us since he was 5. Roping and chipping for years now and he just asked to use the 200t so I started training him with the saw. He started getting paid $1/day now he is up to $2/hr.

Intelligence is over rated... and work ethic is under rated. Start them young and retire early!!!

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

That's really nice Isaiah, I admire dudes that start children learning a good work ethic early on, it sets the right tone for their adult life. Pays off big dividends when it time to earn a living. Can't wait to start Samuel my 8 month old with helping around the house, he is such a pleasure to have around, my little compadre.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

We started trying to teach them the value of a dollar. I gave him a dollar and when we go to the store tomorrow he gets to pick some candy..probly gummie bears and he gets to pay . He works, earns and then spends his dollar. He just figured out what pockets are for so only logical to start teaching life lessons early. He looked so proud afterwards. Had a look of accomplishment on his face sitting next to me on the porch swing. Wish I knew what was going through his mind.

Its so awesome to watch them learn and discover. Even better to be the one teaching and watching them learn under your guidance. As he's two though I'm tired of saying "quit climbing." Turn your head and he's at the top of a bookshelf. I'm ready to say "Come on get up that tree boy!"

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

Isaiah your posts are so mature and refreshing for such a young dude. Wish I had my head screwed on half as tight as that at that age, was such a maniac glad I have mellowed otherwise life might have been short. At least with you out there I know there are some good guys left.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

I went thru one helluva wild stage. Still gotta lil left in me tho. Took alot of mistakes, regrets, and hurting people I loved. I'm no saint but am putting forth effort to be a better man each and everyday. Now that kids are in my life its important to me to set a good example.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

No hardhat, safety glasses! OSHA will be all over you. Just kidding. Very cute picture.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

My kid was about that size when I had him picking up sticks. Now 22 and graduated college, his first thought was...

Party?

Travel?

Go to grad school ad infinitum?

Nope. What he wants most is to...get a full-time job and make it on his own!

I think all that labor as a child had a positive effect. Besides, that is, saving me from having to pick up all those sticks!

Guess I should be setting those examples too...gotta get him some PPE..

He did see me cutting the log without chaps...yikes...and they were just behind the seat of the truck!

Anybody got a good place to get ANSI approved toddler size hardhats and safety glasses?

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

Now a days I have my son now 16 going on 17 helping me out with jobs. Which is weird most kids his age are stuck in their rooms with an x box controller in their hands for hours. Told him about saving money and cars so now he is up a couple gs for a car and still bugs me for money.Haven't told him yet about the college fund that he has been putting into( put about 100 dollars in for him)

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

my 11 year old (in the pic) worked circles around a 50 year old that just got out of jail. the 50 year old is in great condition. It was a mullberry removal a few days ago and there was a 10ft log 10inches in diameter (pretty heavy) I told Jonathan (my son) "get the other end" to my suprise he picked it up easy. The 50 year old took it from him only because it made him look bad. Every time he pulled something he had to stop and rest. One of my sons favorite shows is This Old House, Sponge Bob Square Pants is his favorite.

A 9 year old chipping and running a 200T?

I question both your intelligence and qualifications as a responsible professional arborist!

Please tell me you're joking here mate.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

Hi, jomoco! I appreciate your concern but I'm not joking. I feel that educating and informing a child of how to properly understand and utilize something, can in most instances be empowering and beneficial to their intelligence, responsibility and future qualifications. I think you may be envisioning it to be worse than it actually was.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

I watched your Digger pine removal vid Bixler, and refrained from commenting on it because mistake prone rookies that are over 18 years old are after all...adults.

I suggest you get professional training before you get seriously hurt in this biz mate.

But even allowing a 9 year old child to get anywhere near any type of chipper or real chainsaw is all I need or want to know about you or your friends to determine that I want nothing more to do with you, other than strongly suggest you get professional help asap.

Sorry to come off so negative mate, but as a father of three you've really ticked me off posting such dangerous nonsense here on a professional tree forum that I respect.
