I'm an advocate for child labor!

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

MN is pretty tight. Glad we were not there when my minor kids were working! now they're major kids; no worries.

No acrobatics? Ringling Bros was smart to go to FL, no such limits there.

Re: I\'m an advocate for child labor!

My Dad made a point of trying to get me involved in work as a kid. So he gave me an unsupervised solo removal project at 6 years old. It was a 3' tall dead spruce. I'm guessing he thought I'd grab a handsaw or a shovel but I went for the high production equipment technique. I put a 20' rope on the back of my bike and took a full speed run at it. The tree won and my balls lost. Learned a couple things that day.

With close supervision and really good instruction kids can do alot. Everyone got firearm safety in school during grade 7 when I was a kid and a day at the range for the final. Nothing but bullseyes for me as I'd been shooting for a couple years prior. Guns are more dangerous than chainsaws. I think it's the strength requirement to handle a saw or feed a chipper that's the limiting factor for kids. Otherwise they could handle it in a controlled enviroment with good instruction. It's certainly good parenting to expose kids to as much as possible in a safe way. If your in tune with your kid you know what they can handle and what you need to protect them from. My kid is a 3 year old border collie so I can only speak from my own childhood. I know perspectives change when you're the parent.

Chainsaws and chippers are two totally different machines and should not be thrown into the same mix. Find me a story where a CHILD accidentally killed themselves with a chainsaw while being supervised by a capable Adult.

How about an instance where a grown man with years of experience loses his life to an accident.

So..... you lost your balls at age 6? That sucks.

It's good you got a border collie to help take up the void of not being able to have a kid.

I feel for ya.

There's snow in the air up here again. It melts, the phone rings, it comes back and me and the dog play in the mud. Lets get this season rolling.

The law you are breaking is
29 CFR 570.54 and .55

BUT OSHA will only show up to bust you after the death.

This is incorrect. (in my case anyway)

I spent the day talking to Federal and State level OSHA reps.

I'm only concerned with Minnesota so you need to contact your specific state's OSHA office.

My Minnesota rep said that OSHA is only interested in the EMPLOYER/EMPLOYEE relationship, my kids are exempt. When my kids become employees, OSHA comes in to play.

And, if there is a death or serious injury? The Police and The Child Protective Service do a dual investigation on whether or not neglect came into play. That scares me more than anything OSHA can do.
