Did a somewhat monstrous poplar (lean, large cavity at base on tension side) in town last week. Owners had got a lotta estimates. I was the big winner...(yay!).....$1500 just to get it on the ground. Highest quote from a competitor (well known outfit B.Tree Expert Co.....nice yellow trucks and equipment) was $7000. They were going to bring in a crane to supplement their bucket truck. I climbed and dismantled it in slightly over 5 hours, with many thanks to a good ground team, and a Hobbs lowering device. Will put up some photos if the guys ever forward some to me.
Dude, I mean no disrespect but you spent most of the day with a crew rigging a hazard tree that could be reached with a bucket? For $1500? I assume that was 5 hours in the tree? Why not bid it for $2000 and rent a bucket? Only saw trunk pic, so maybe it wasn't that bad and everybody else over bid it.Yeah, it was a tad lousy.

5 hours in the tree means prob a full day with drive time and set up. Why not use a bucket? They was plenty of room in the bid. You said they were getting it out of the way. I assume that means u had 3 people on that job. Why climb a hazard tree that u could put a bucket on with a 3 man crew for almost all day for $1500? It's awesome that u are still taking down trees at 55. There are plenty of shit trees out there that equipment won't reach. It sounds like there was an plenty of cash on the table to get equipment and still get the job. Why not use it and save ur skills for the ones u can't? I don't know u or the job so I may be wrong.Yes, 5 hours in the tree. About 1 & 1/2 hours of that with a MS441.
I believe a person can grow way too dependant on using a bucket or tracked lift, etc.
I was getting wood on the ground pretty much as fast as they could get it outta the way.
btw, I used to own a bucket. Sold it 9 years ago, and seldom miss it.
I'll be 55 in March.
I knew you would. You're not the first old, gay billygoat that finds me irresistible. But, you swing one way in the tree, Liberace, and I swing the other way. Sorry, you're in for some big disappointments.
dead trees are one of those things i really wish i had a seasoned mentor to learn from, instead of learning my limits by rolling up to a job and deciding as I'm climbing the tree whether or not I'm going to continue. guess we learn either way tho...
Pelorus, dead white pines just creep me out, good stuff getting em' done.
Had one just like that yesterday. Big red, not too dead. Still serviceable.

Damn those Carolina poplars are vicious growers, that one grew 6-12' a year... upside down!Yes, 5 hours in the tree. About 1 & 1/2 hours of that with a MS441.

All the needles were still on. Just redA red...white pine? gotta see that one.
Any "boss" should be able to do any tree they ask you to do in my opinion.Don't forget all you employees out there...there are plenty of employers that just might favor making money over your safety and are fully aware that your injuries or worse may just be a Worker's Comp. claim and nothing more. Beware.
