Headsets

The company I am working for is looking to purchase headsets...So what is everyone using and what are the pros and cons to the different systems?Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks
Steve Baker

We've got Peltor PowerCom Plus. They have worked out great for us. And they mount fine right on your hard had (ie the mount doesnt suck)

We will never buy another set of earmarks, to keep 2 working you need 5, count on 2 or 3 being broken at all times... to make matters worse the past 3 times we have sent them in for repairs it has taken over a month to get them back, and the last time they came back still broken.
We have switched to eartec's digicom. The sound quality and range is unbelievable, more then makes up for having to deal with the box and wire. They are also very responsive, we sent ours back to add Mic mute switches and they modified them and had them shipped out they same day they received them

Is the eartec compatible with Kask helmets? How is the fit when the headset is used with a hard hat? Do they have a cord and if so, would it not get in the way when working in or around a tree?

I am looking around for new headsets and thought earmark was the way to go, but after these comments I am not sure.

They are totally different then the Earmark head sets, (FYI the earmarks work awful with the KASK)

We attached the box to the climber’s saddle and he runs the wire inside his shirt and wears the headset piece under his helmet. We have been using them for several months now and haven’t had a problem with the wire. The Earmark setup is more convenient just having everything attached to the helmet but we just couldn’t justify using them anymore.
We had an incident with one Earmark headset where the climber ended up in a swarm of bees and they were under his helmet stinging him, he ripped the helmet off and broke one of the wires going into the headset. We sent it back and told them what happened (headset was about 2years old) Earmark called me and told me it was un repairable. They couldn’t understand why i was upset; a broken wire on a $800 headset and it couldn’t be repaired.
Right now we have a box of 5 earmarks and we have one working pair.
The Earmarks tend to pick up all sorts of static and if you don’t have good line of site they tend to have lots of interference.
The Eartec's scan for the clearest frequency each time you turn the on. Since we have had them we have had zero static, not even a crackle once.
We were so sick of dealing with Earmark if the Eartec's hadn’t worked out we were going back to the $40 4 packs of Motorola talkabouts and just throwing them away when they broke.
The technology is so far superior on the Eartec’s, we used the Earmarks for years and now that we have used the Eartec’s there is no way we will go back

you get a free one with this half-whack or what?

you don't need ear plugs with the headset either. does a great job of keeping things quiet. fits nice and tight unlike the earmarks. i would duct tape the wire to the top of my helmet to keep the ear muffs from free sliding down their supports and flopping around my ears (hence the ear plugs). also a headband to keep them in place.

the eartec fit right to your head and then you put the helmet on. actually i slide the ear part into the the chin straps so i can pull the hardhat on and still be able to buckle the chin strap.

highly recommend them if you serious about communicating with your climber.

Are you referring to the problems with the earmark headsets?

Yes he is talking about how poorly the Earmarks fit.

Here are a couple pictures of the climbers setup

Haven't tried them with the KASK's yet, it should work fine, we unscrew the earmuffs and feed the helmet straps thru the eartec setup, takes about 5-10 mins to set it up the first time, once you put it together u just put the helmet on and plug it in. If you are intrested call them see if u can get a pair to try

We ordered them from EarTec, we got the climber and two spotter set, sort of. We have two Xtreme headsets and one monarch. The monarch is nice inside the crane (cab has ac so the door is closed and its quiet inside. If i was anywhere else on the job site i prefer the Extreme headset, fits very tight to the head and works as hearing protection. We had eartec add mic kill switches to them, it was very loud thru the headsets when someone was standing next to the chipper they charged an extra $30 a set to add that.

dave, check this link out. but i would recommend getting 2 of the extreme headset instead of the 1 monarch. since you will be operating outside of a cab the monarch seems to pick up a ton of extra sound and doesnt fit as great with a helmet on and doesn't really stay on your head too great if you looking around alot. they work good if you sitting in an enclosed cab though cause you don't move around too much.

the extreme in the link i am showing you has a different mouth piece than ours but the headset it self is awesome for noise reduction. ie. i can keep my helmet on and keep working even if its not in use for communication. (since the box is attached to my saddle and wired to my headset i don't take the saddle off until the job is done) maybe ask them for the heavy duty extreme or even ask for the one's we are using. they'll know what they sold us.

highly recommend them.

What really has amazed us with the Eartec’s is the sound quality. No static, no interference. When we would work in the city it didn’t matter what we used or what channel we used we would pick up baby monitors and cordless phones and all sorts of other stuff. This never happends with the eartec. You can have a conversation at normal speaking volume with the climber while he is making a cut. We will see if they hold up we have been using them every day for a few months now, had an issue with the master set just stopped working and they shipped me a new one, had it the next day.
