Pave paradise...put up a parking lot

---Joni Mitchell

Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. A civilization which destroys what little remains of the wild, the spare, the original, is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of civilization itself.

---Edward Abbey, Desert Solitaire

I got into a heated discussion many years ago when drilling in ANWR was proposed. My point was that there are places on Earth that shouldn't be changed. Even if I never go to ANWR or any other wilderness just knowing it was there was comfort enough. This other guy could not see what difference it made if Wilderness...yes, it is an entity and deserves a capitalization...were there or not. Grrrrr...I walked away from him in the middle of one of his sentences

ANWR - don't get me started... There are three properties up there on the Alaskan arctic coastal plain - the Prudhoe bay commercial oil and gas extraction zone, the national petroleum reserve, and ANWR. When have we ever heard someone say "let's drill in the national petroleum reserve", or "let's go back and frack in Prudhoe Bay"? Nope, it's "let's drill in the wildlife refuge"... smh. The max production scenarios are low relative to GDP and the world market. It's really just a classic man on nature assault.

Perhaps some perspective is in order. This is partly a reaction to Obama's arrogant legal short-cut as a lame duck. His declaration was a nakedly partisan consolation prize to his base, much as today's actions were.

Obama wanted to throw some red meat to his base on his way out the door. So he used the Antiquities Act to declare millions of acres "National Monuments". He did this because he had not the time, desire, or respect for the law to use the correct, but much more difficult democratic process: creating a National Park.

The 1906 Antiquities Act stated that it was intended for: "... the protection of objects of historic and scientific interest." These areas are given the title of "National Monuments."

OBJECTS.

Further, "The Act states that areas of the monuments are to be confined to the smallest area compatible with the proper care and management of the objects to be protected".

OBJECTS.

Obama got too cute by half. Want to create or expand a national park? I'm all for it. Start the process. (Yes, its difficult. For a reason). Want to wave your arm and unilaterally decree millions of acres of private land essentially government property? No. Obama wasn't an emperor. This is what happens when you abuse power and use loopholes to act like one. He set a crappy precedent for the next guy (Trump). Reap what you sow.

It isn't unprecedented- many presidents did it as well as Roosevelt. It's one of the unilateral powers the president has.

I acknowledge Trump has the power to do this - the next pres can reverse it.

The tax law will have much more, long lasting damage.

Talk about Christmas ornaments

I'd quibble about specific areas with native American ruins that were not being adequately protected by their managing entities (state? BLM?). For the most part, though, I agree. Obama got too aggressive with his pen in the latter part of his administration, which sets precedent for future presidents to do the same. Trump's pardon of Joe Arepo surprised me because of its casualness. I also have poor opinions of Arepo but they are not germane to the observation of Trump's expedited pardon. Obama is at fault for opening that floodgate, and thinking he could get away with it because HRC would smooth everything over for him.

Was your post a follow-up from the ANWR comments, or does it tie in elsewhere? If it's a follow-up to the ANWR comments, I'd say that it's so disconnected - ruins and caribou in the southwest and the arctic coastal plain, respectively - that a retribution could take any form - Republican gerrymandering in Florida, for instance. Additionally, the Bears Ears/Grand Staircase issue was dealt with fairly directly when Trump unpreserved the majority of those lands.

Personally, I think it's just a baseline sickness to go after the ANWR. One doesn't do it for the sake of massive oil extraction. I'm left with the awkward assumption that one does it to put the stamp of human power on ANWR, trophy hunt style.

Ordering our CDC to limit or omit the language needed to warn us about imminent threats or conditions we need awareness with..Zika outbreaks, cancer clusters, active pathogenic focal points, etc...
..is the same as telling fire captains on the line that can't mention "imminent, breaching, hot spots, or need help or assistance" over their radios or to the media.
Fuck you who support trump and his party in any blinded faithful form. Fuck you.
Do you run your business or treat your families like your elected zealots do? If not, just..why?
Jobs. Jesus. Hate?
What the fuck?
Do you want a civil war? Have you really even ever known war aside from the hero hype?

With the tax bill and what it does and why this week and you never read it but trust those who tell you its good for america while ordering our heath watchdogs to shut up and leave open a seconds option to a global war with zero support from other nations that we've become the only reason terror reigns?
Help me understand your fucking justification for the disassembly of America. Please.
There is no Obama or Hillary in this dialogue either. Completely irrelevant.
Its on you.

This site clusters with helpful advice, the questions for the most part are valid, and what you do is both important and meaningful. We're not just an industry, we are students and lovers of trees. Adding value to and learning more about their function and threats. Safety is constantly covered as what we do amazes and endangers us. We share what works and what doesn't. Also we bond as a community, calling what's hype and spreading the word about falsehoods and illegalities. We also help each other weather the worst..sicknesses, births, deaths, and life.
There are also those who seek only money and profit shortcuts or advice on products to just have a drive of dominance or market shares or services that reward but might not reflect what's right, respectful, or with any integrity or concern a poor retired couple can afford your structured-for-maximum profit gains..but victims of catastrophic events only represents next year's planned expansions. Get human again, make your life worth something more than the success of trump's destruction of a planet we should be grateful for and respective of.
Family values?
Fiscally conservative?
They no longer are the republican party. Wake fucking up
Oh, my words may offend you, but your actions are much worse.

Its not a political debate.
It's a castration of what we built to protect us. All of us unfortunately.
Eliminate the EPA, CPSC, CDC, and hope your business thrives?
You should'nt be anywhere near a tree.
