NEW DELHI: At least 400 children in India would have developed polio after receiving the oral polio vaccine (OPV) over the past five years, a top Indian paediatrician has revealed in a just published scientific paper that questions the ethics of the continued use of OPV.
T Jacob John, who has earlier advised the World Health Organisation and the Indian government on polio eradication policies, has described the continued use of OPV as an “ethical anomaly” that is causing avoidable polio to children.
India has been free from wild polio virus since 2011, but the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has never released data on vaccine associated polio paralysis (VAPP), a rare adverse effect of OPV that causes infantile paralysis.
All children under 6 in the country have been receiving multiple doses of OPV — that contain live polio viruses — since 1994, through pulse polio programme while the government also launched injectible polio virus schedule for children in 2015.
John challenged the current policy saying the government has continued with OPV because “it’s easy and commercially more viable”. “For the sake of convenience, ethical issues have been ignored by several poor countries like India; the existing programme needs to be reviewed,” added John, an emeritus professor at Christian Medical College, Vellore.
He has published the analysis jointly with Mumbai-based paediatrician Dhanya Dharmpalan in the Indian Journal of Ethical Issues. John has pointed out that in nearly 40 countries, governments had long stopped OPV due to risk of polio associated with it.
In the OPV given to children worldwide, Type 2 vaccine viruses was withdrawn from use in 2016; it continues to contain Type 1 and 3 strains of viruses that can cause VAPP. Children in India are given two intradermal fractional doses of IPV at 14 weeks and 6 years in lieu of the recommended one full dose intramuscular IPV at 14 weeks.
The paper has highlighted that in last five years, globally, cases of polio caused by vaccine viruses have outnumbered those of polio caused by wild polio viruses.
The claim that 400 of that group would develop a RARE side effect amounts to a 0.0003% chance or 1 in 317,500. To put that in perspective, you are 35 times more likely to be killed by a gun in the United States (1 in 9000). But I won't go there.......
The fact that vaccine caused polio now out numbers wild cases is actually a testament to the efficacy of the vaccine, not a criticism of it.
I also like how you conveniently left out the last two paragraphs of the article:
Top officials in the health ministry, however, said the benefits attached with OPV far outweighed the risks. “We have relied on OPV because of the results it has shown in last 25 years in eradicating wild polio,” said an official. “Moreover, we have following WHO guidelines on polio eradication programme and do not have the technical expertise to go beyond its recommendation.”
Another official said unless neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan stopped reporting cases of wild polio, it would be difficult to withdraw OPV from India.
What price am I paying? How was I duped?
Was I doubtful and a touch cynical about the COVID vaccine when it first came out? Absolutely. But, I listened to the experts and the experiences of people who got it right away and decided the benefits outweigh the risks so had myself and my family immunized. And you know what happened? Sweet fuck all, except none of us got COVID.
Perhaps it's the anti-vaxxers who should be the ones apologizing. If not for all the sane people who got the jab and raised the group immunity, we might still be in lockdown and listening to the Cheesy Poof tell us to swallow battery acid or some bullshit.

There hadn't been a native case of polio in the United states since the 70s. New parents ask thrmselves... is my kid likely to be the first person in the US to get polio since the 70s???
Rotovirus only causes mild cases of diarrhea in developed countries. Hep B can only be acquired from , sex, sharing needles, or from mother to baby. Since all pregnant mothers are screened. Where is the kid going to get her b that he needs the vaxx on his first day of life?

So according to John the OPV COULD have POTENTIALLY maybe. Have put 400 kids EXPOSED to maybe a live virus. So John is advocating for other polio vaccines instead.

My only experience with anyone who had polio was ‘English guy’ who was going on a circuit with my friends who had the last actual circus freak show. English Guy was with the BBC doing a documentary and seemed to be addicted to coke.
He hit about 110mph heading to Bisbee when he realized he botched his timing for the makeup shot as the clip he was splicing into has the circus hitting Mule mountain tunnel right as the sun was setting.
Have you ever been in a car with a one armed English Guy coked out chasing the sunset? Gawd I hope not!

I was initially un-ignoring to see what he had said that y'all were responding to, so as not to feel left out, and then realized that I just don't care, and neither does he.
