First time on spurs ever

Logic mentioned the climbing rope and choking the spar earlier, great tip. I did start doing that to take some weight off when possible and for descent. That does help some. This is why I belong here, you guys are always full of great suggestions and reviews.

I am using the caddy's on my buck ti's sometimes too...they are very good pads....also...a little bulky but comfort is no issue with them....I like the gaff offset of the buck ti's more than the Distels, but I keep wearing the Distels because they fit me so well...Caddy pads are a way cheaper option also at around 69 bucks....

Monkey, I have some old double strap leather pads that I might be able to get your way if you're interested. Much wider shin area than the L pads which are pretty damned uncomfortable. So you never answered...are yours the L shaped upper pads?

Sorry TL, they are stock "L" pads that come on Kleins. I think for the cost I am just going to try the Cadillac's. What do I have to loose other than a few bucks. They seem to have less negative reviews than the CL's do. They both have lots of positive reviews.

Should make a huge difference so it's a no brainer.

One other thing: Don't do like me and put the right climber on the left foot. That hurts. Just remember that there is one for right and one for left. Should be indicated somewhere on the inside of the shin pad or the shank. I'm pretty much self taught and I went through months of pain over that mistake.

IMHO, the choked spar is only for work positioning especially on small stuff....coming down it's a PITA....just my two cents...plus if I am on spurs I am taking the tree down so i go back and forth on how my lanyard is set...it varies so much in combo with my climbline...hey whatever you feel comfortable with...soon you will be flying up and down....

For me, on a big fat removals if I'm standing all day, I'll periodically sit on the climb line and take my spikes out of the tree for a minute. Helps with sore shins.

I agree with Mr. Logic on this one; being able to hang there and give your arches a break is important. It is also important to have a second tie in in the event you cut one. I was cutting a large Oak spar and cut clean through my rope before I even knew it. I remember thinking, "that looks like dandelion fluff floating by" then my rope went slack. Lesson learned, dandelions don't grow in trees and tie in twice.

ML, you are going to love those Caddy pads I have some and they are great. Before I got them the shank would rub the skin off the inside of my calves.

Monkeylove I missed why
Shins TL, ordered my Cadillac pads today. I have figured out going up is way nicer than coming down. I'll take that choked spar coming down, much nicer.
You did your self a service buying the caddy's .. As long as your shank heights correct you will notice a difference in comfort caddy pads are awesome

Monkey, another thing with the choked line on the spar, try tying the running bowline with say, a 6'(ft) tail, then you can come down 6' while sitting in your saddle and then use the tail to retrieve it.

Or you can get a good 3 ring friction saver with prusik and you can use it like a climbing line all the way down the trunk and retrieve it from the ground.

Okay got the Caddy's today. Spent a couples hours climbing around in them and just hanging out on the spar. Even had a catch with the neighbors kid, he was on the ground. First time I felt comfortable, could hardly tell they were even there. Thanks to all for the imput.
