First time on spurs ever

You talking coming back down the spar after dropping the top, right? Usually just tie a running bowline around the trunk with some sort of friction device connected to the bridge of your saddle. When the lanyard/hips start biting a little just sit on the climbing line for a few. The hips and feet will feel better. A good pair of spikes make all the difference though. And when you're stopped for a minute just standing, get your lanyard a little above waist level.

Lol, I wish Logic. I am still staying under 10 feet. This was only my 3rd time ever on gaffs. I am talking as a general practice as I go up or down. Once I get past that then I am going to try the choking method.

You can still do what I explained going up too monkey. It's actually safer because if the spikes slip out you'll sit back on your climb line, instead of sliding down the trunk. Just keep the running bowline and lanyard together when flipping them up. It's a little slower though. And again, take breaks when needed. We all usually try to get to the top as quickly as possible though and save the majority of standing on the spikes for the way back down. When possible I always try to set a line up high and have someone hold down on it to advance my friction device while spiking up.

Clipping into the side D rings is much more stable. You just have to adjust the lanyard so you are not rubbing your belly on the trunk.;) I joke about it because that is what I did at first.

Okay hopefully this won't start a war but....I need new pads, the stock Kleins are killing me. Pads only for Klein spurs; thoughts on Climb Right or Cadillac or special order the Buck supers for Kleins? If it matters....5'10" 185lbs, 15" calves, Red Wing 9" loggers. Thanks

I have tried the climb right (other climber I work with uses them) and the Cadillac. I settled with the Cadillac Pads. Those pads answered all my comfort problems and were much better than the climb rights in my opinion. The Cadillac's are more clunky though. I just wrapped the shank in electrical tape. Good luck on your search monkeyLove.

I have Distels/Geckos and Buck ti's....with that said, I always ran the buck ti's the Distels are a new addition...with the kleins you cannot go wrong with the super wrap pads ( metal insert ) or the caddy's....Distels are very comfy love them but so are the buck ti's...can stand in both all day....with Salewas or Arbpros....does not matter...hope it helps ya monkeylove...gaffs are just something ya get used to with practice...

I'm not on spurs enough to justify 2 pair. Just looked to add some comfort for when I am. Although I have heard some nice things about those Geckos.

Thanks Swing, I am getting better and more comfortable using them which just makes the shins my only issue. I caught the Kleins on sale a while back from Luke for like 150ish so I can't complain to loud.

Yeah I would go with the super wrap pads with metal insert...they last forever but are pricey...think around 150 ish.. Can't go wrong with them...

I think getting used to spurs is the same as (and don't quote me on any of this because I know nothing really about it) Kung fu masters rubbing their shin and forearm bones with wooden blocks or something so they just get used to it, something about the constant pressure causing the nerves to shift or something like that. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Anyway, when I first started on spurs it sucked. It is as uncomfortable as hell, period, and eventually you just get used to it. Maybe better gear will help, but I think it's just going to suck for awhile. Once I understood that I could at least deal with it and get through it. Good luck monkeylove!

Unless you're like 5'4" puting climb right pads on the kleins will be too short for u. They bolt directly to the shank which is shorter than other brand spurs.

Jon I am not sure I relate with this....I understand what you are saying, up to six hours I am good after that the pain can set in...we just were not to stand in spurs, but footwear and good pads can make all the difference, plus stances in the tree is also important...using ones climbline for support at time also helps...you know these things I know, this is for monkey love's ears...
