Why not have a little fun in the snow??

I just test drove the new system and found I have a few kinks to work out, mainly my hitch.

wow I've been meaning to post those pics on this thread. thanks Adrian.
have you been climbing on that blaze? or did you find some PI?

I've been rocking the Blaze. Dad has PI that I'll try later. I have some Tachyon also, but there are a few glazed spots, where some fibers have hardened up. Probably from natural crotching, which I do every so often. But so far I've been liking the feel of Blaze and PI better than Tachyon. A little softer on the hands I think.

Tried some PI out today and liked it a lot! Between the Blaze and PI, I think PI definitely works better. For one, the hitch didn't lock up as much. With Blaze, it would lock up sometimes, but with PI I never had a serious lock up. Everything ran smoothly, and it was nice having a slightly larger rope to grip.

Quick point I've discovered. Using the lanyard to hold the hitch up so it acts like a chest ascender works wonders for the various ascent styles. You can foot-lock and sit in your hitch, or use a Pantin, and the hitch will advance up the rope very easily. No pushing it up with your hands. You can also incorporate an ascender above the hitch and do a full on foot-lock or just the ascender and Pantin.

I agree stacy, that a back up MUST be ABOVE the ascender.

I think we can't ignore this safety measure just for the name of efficiency.

I'll take pictures today of what i'm doing. Its simple and efficient.

I've talked about the issue of backups many times before.

this is a way of thinking...if backups are needed for mechanicals why not for hitches too? At what point do we NEED redundacies? Who says that mechanicals are 'required'? The only place that I've seen that is in competition and I've tried to get someone to explain why. There is a huge inconsistency.

"It is one thing to have both a belt and suspenders to keep your pants from falling off. It's another thing to wear suspenders because you have a belt. Azelin Cola of Wishford"

"How can you trust a man who can't trust his own pants;you wear both a belt and suspenders...Henry Fonda in 'Once Upon a Time in the West"

I don't see why a back up is needed above the ascender all the time. If it's a tall climb, straight up, then maybe I'll put a backup above the ascender to give myself that safer feeling. But for many trees, I don't see why you would need a back up above the ascender. Bee Line has a breaking strength of 8400lbs, and if you tie your hitch right, you should have no trouble trusting your life to the hitch.

Hey you wanna climb with out a backup thats up to you!

But why then follow any of our safety standards. Do you one hand a chainsaw? How about two points of connection when using a chainsaw? Guys spike up with out even connecting their lanyard, this is probably acceptable too. Free climb to the top to set a climbing line, no need to lanyard in when redirecting. Do you do any of these things? They all are guidelines for us to follow to make work safer and avoid accident.

Backups are considered necessary because there have been multiple failures with mechanical ascenders. Try telling those that have had one fail that they shouldn't need a backup. Personally i've seen an ascender stop grabbing the rope all together! If he didn't have it backed up he's hanging onto a rope with no way down. Try telling him you shouldn't back up an ascender. Its not my life on the line its yours! Make your own decisions, and suffer your own consequences. Just don't wanna read about you in the awakenings!

Back to F8.

Here are some pictures of how i have my F8 system set up. There are some subtle changes that i have made. I also took some short video's, i'll see if i can get them up.

Derrick, I thought the connector was supposed to be attached to the Revolver. It seems like the tension would keep the friction more consistent, rather than the way you have it pictured, with the 'biner (not a Revolver, right?) just hanging free-ish. How does that setup work for you?

My understanding behind the reasoning for backing up above the mechanical is this. If your climbing hitch(backup) is below the ascender and the ascender fails it is going to come down on your climbing hitch and push it down with you along with it (not functioning as a backup).
I agree that at some point the redundancy can get a little out of hand but then again I am not a cat and I only get one chance.
I will set my system up on Monday how Jesse and I talked about it last week and post some pics.
Lets see that video Derrick.
