F8 revolver

Here is a picture of my set up to ascend with the hitch still at my harness and a footlocking prussic above. This allows me to stop mid ascent and switch to descend if the need arises.

I'll try and explain what i did on the video incase some can't view it.

I have my lanyard around my shoulder connected to my hitch climber. There is a prussic extended just like a footlocking prussic. I footlock the tail, sitting on my hitch each to time this allows me to use very little energy, its not as fast as traditional footlocking but less tiresome.

If i need to change to descent, i can do so at any time. I extend the top "footlocking" prussic and sit into it, take some slack at my climbing hitch i'll install the F8. I'll then take a lock and release the top "footlocking" prussic and remove it. I'm now only on the F8 and can descend as normal. Its a rather quick changeover.

Trying to figure out what you did in that footage DM-could you splain it to me.Still need your address Derrick, Chinda made you some dvds but we totally forgot.

Fate Revolver

I was thinking maybe if we start writing this as the Fate system rather than F8. I think there can be a lot of confusion because an F8 is a very specific tool that is used in a specific way.
In the fate system it doesnt even need to be an F8 at all or for that matter, a revolver.

Im tossing around the idea of "Fate tender" because then it is a noun but is broad enough to refer to any device that allows you to operate a hitch smoothly in SRT. Kind of like "prussic minder" which is a noun that refers to various things that go below the hitch.

I like how Fate revolver sounds though. Anyway, my point is that we should stop writing it as F8 because I think that can be confusing somewhat.

Re: Fate Revolver

I don't see what that gained in the rigging application.

Choking a sling onto the tip and then clipping the biner back onto the rope would do the same thing. What is the purpose of using the ring?

Re: Fate Revolver

I think in the video, the climber was trying to balance the piece. I checked out the thread over on arbtalk, and he's experimenting with it as a way to balance pieces. Basically it replaces tying a prussic onto the rigging line (like a spider leg)

He said the problem in the video was the sling was just too short.

That was my observation as well. I think if the sling were about 4' to 5' longer it may have created a nice balanced load.

Interesting idea. I like it.

Re: Fate Revolver

why not a spider leg? What does that bring to the table that the leg does not except 2 more metal items in a tree. Possibly auto balancing the piece? Its hard to tel because of the small sling.

I think the goal is to avoid tying the prussic. All you have to do is pass a bight through the ring, and clip the biner to it. Seems a lot simpler and quicker than tying a prussic.

Re: Fate Revolver

so im a little sad but happy too really. FT sent me a Kong Robot and I have to say it works nicely. (thank you very very much by the way!)
Im sad because its not the fate revolver but Im happy that there is a slick tool out there that does the trick nicely. It is real narrow so the hitch doesnt jam. It is low profile and slides through crotches. it is easy to pop on and off. It slides a little bit rougher but I think it is just a little different action. I think it tends to the hitch a little better. I will be definitly using it over the fate revolver. this said, It too could use some modification. It has a sharp edge that seems to scrape the rope a little bit. I think the bend could be a little softer so it would slide a little easier. but all in all, good on you Holly for figuring that one out.

Oh, and this does mean that no competition should have any issue with this system . This was exactly how the robot is to be used I imagine. some judges were concerned that I was using the F8 and revolver in unintended ways.

Re: Fate Revolver

I would also like to see how the kong robot is integrated in the system. Looks like an interesting tool, but how easy is it to advance up the rope when limb walking?

Re: Fate Revolver

Ill get one up soon. it operates about the same as the old way. Maybe slightly more friction... I would like to modify it some and reduce the friction so it slides better. The design is right though. its tighter, more compact and easier to pop on and off. and it doesnt jam in the hitch. I always seem to forget my camera so Ill take a pic soon.
