F8 revolver

Re: F8 revolver w/video

nah it's more of creating some friction above the hitch so you can lower yourself on just the hitch? I belive this is the piont as thats all it seems to do for me.

Re: F8 revolver w/video

would a muenter on a biner to your saddle below the friction hitch below the knot be just as easy for the descent?

Re: F8 revolver w/video

Yes, it certainly is just as easy, and less gear intensive (everyone has an extra biner, right?) Although as described here it does impart some twist in the line much like a figure 8. That's generally not a problem when descending less than 50 feet or so. I think some of the guys in this thread are trying (successfully?) to work the whole tree on SRT only in which case the Munter would not be a good option.

Re: F8 revolver w/video

Good on ya!

Can you notice a diferrence in time or efficiency vs. Ddrt?
I know about the ease of setup and redirecting, but how about the actual work positioning, limbwalking, etc. as it relates to overall job time?

Re: F8 revolver w/video

similar. every situation is different. I find myself using it. and I normally drift toward things that are easiest. Ive said this before, but while going dDRT, you get bored, or want to do some crazy redirects and get your rope all wrapped up. unclip your the splice off your harness and secure it to a limb. clip in F8rev above hitch and go. both worlds are easily accessible. To me, it is a very practical and simple way to work a tree. maybe im biased though.

Re: F8 revolver w/video

just out of curiousity how do you tie off when using SRT? Do you run it down to another tree and tie it off that way or do you run a running bowline up to the top?

Re: F8 revolver w/video

what got me started SRT was hurricane work in texas. I was trying to go as fast as I possibly could. I would throw the line over the tree. pull line over and tie off to the closest possible sturdy trunk with a simple wrap around the tree and then running bowline (yosemite). In the texas i was not setting it up to be recued. I was going for as many trees as I could in a day. Bassically you want to tie it up so it will be out of the way.

I kept my friction hitch tied on the rope at all times. I would acend the tree either by ladder, footlocking, or straight climbing. then, install F8rev and go. decend, untie from tree, pull out, and install in next tree.
I was getting bucket truck numbers.

(although i wasnt getting paid like a bucket truck:( )

When I am in the tree and decide to go SRT, I sometimes takes two or three wraps around the trunk or branch and tie off. I Will often do this befor any kind of funky redirect.

YOU CAN TAKE LIKE 8 REDIRECTS AND FEEL NO FRICTION!

in texas I could move horizontally through the rows of pines along the roadway.

I could go for as long horizontally as my rope would let me. just climbing through crotches feeling secure and with the same amount of friction as always.

Re: F8 revolver w/video

Makes sense. Great way to innovate and adapt. I see what you mean know by how it can be much more efficient. Keeps you from having to keep pulling your line and resetting it to keep the same amount of friction.

Re: F8 revolver w/video

I tried this the other day. I had to take a wrap off my VT, but it worked well. I wasn't able to tend slack unless I took the F8 off. Has potential... if i could get over my love affair with my ddrt.

Ahhh..the beginning of an SRT convert! The world is a better place because of it

Re: F8 revolver w/video

maybe your eight is too small, what are you using as hitch cord? it should tend if ylou dont have too much weight on the rope.

I still don't understand this. The revolver thingie isn't an ascender and looks like it would be a pretty wimpy descender. Is there any hardware gadget that fills both roles?

Yes...the Unicender. http://thompsontreetools.com/ There are several threads on the Unicender.

This setup is a cheaper and less efficient means of accomplishing the same thing.

How about if the bar on a kong robot descender would rotate in only the ascent direction (ratchet lock)?

Re: F8 revolver w/video

after watching the video i setup the system in a 20 foot tall tree and tried it out, to my amazement this system was awesome, i made a few of my own little tweaks to it now but i am seeing lots of times i will be using it in the near future. i thought of one way that you could change your system mid line aswell, using possibly a hand acender attached to your belt , footlock up and slaping it above your f8 and then loading all your weight on to it then with the slack in your friction hitch change over the setup make another footlock and diconnect your acender. you could throw the acender under you friction hitch or just take it off completly.

i was just down at the reginal comp in portland and was showing this setup around trying to spread the word, but i am a huge fan and will be incorperting it into my everyday climbing

thanks for the great idea kevin

gone climbing
