OK,
here it is. Some of you might know Dave Bryant, "treeslayer" from the early days on arboristsite.. He's from VA, and helped me out getting stump grinding work in Williamsburg after Hurricane Isabel.
He was in his "have saw will travel" mode so he came to Philly and stayed in the in-law's suite. I had seen some of his cuts and was trying to show him there was a better way. But I know how tree guys are. So rather than have an argument about which falling cut is better I wanted to show him, in a convincing way.
I think this was only the second day we worked together. He had climbed the tree and asked me a couple of times if I wanted him to take it down to shorten the fall. I told him to leave it as a way of demonstrating how much confidence I had in the open face. There is a distinction between thinking you're good, and having the kind of confidence it takes to trust your skill when there is property at risk. The more expensive the property, the more confidence needed. That's often not fully appreciated in this biz.
The next day Dave asked for a lesson in falling trees.
