JerzyGirl that oak looks a lot like a tulip poplar. If it is poplar watch out for the lot weaker than oak limbs.

He's right. It looks like Liriodendron tulipifera. Stay close to the trunk and tie into branches bigger than your thigh!

Re: Does anyone climb fo\' fun anymore?

It does look a lot like a tulip tree in the pics, but I can't be sure. If so, I'm with them other fellers... big tie-ins. Watch for little leaky rot holes that have large areas of decay behind them. Did a wicked trunk slam in a hug tulip once, felt like I'd been in a car wreck the next day.

Re: Does anyone climb fo\' fun anymore?

you all be right - i went back and looked closer and there be leaves on the ground under all the OAK leaves from the near by trees and a flower left in the tree, be-knocks did the trick, BIG THICK branches great for tie-ins near the trunk - the only way to climb (for me anyway). i am looking for my first 100 climb and thought this might be it. ANYWAY - still looking and if I get into this one - i will take pictures - shadows and feet that be me, shadows and feet

take care all and THANKS

Grand pa and the Grand kids. One of the few that the loggers left behind. Respect for the elders...

Darn I forgot to throw in the climbing gear. You can't get very far without it!

Dang, looks like you could just about get up that on a roll of tape and hand jams.

That tree trunk looks like the sculpture from "Close Encounters of the third kind", doesn't it?

I can't wait to go back to the Redwoods.

That certainly would explain Roberts fascination with mashed potatoes.

Re: Does anyone climb fo\' fun anymore?

POW ...

The tree is as wide as it is tall !!

Imagine a side limb seventy feet long attached to a tree standing over hundred fifty tall...

The leverage in a snow storm ?

Oh how the limbs learn to shed the ice and snow load ASAP..

Nothing worse then being under a snow loaded limb two hundred feet up when it wants to let go.. Run for yer life..

Re: Does anyone climb fo\' fun anymore?

You sir, are correct. This beauty rises from the forest floor leaving behind its many Grandkids. To get to this hunk of a tree it takes a little bit of a hike. Well worth the effort.

I wandered upon this tree some thirty years ago while exploring the area. In this nature study area are several worthy giants. Anyone who can make a little time available should make a treck on up to the top of the ridge and do some of your own exploring. Nowhere in the world do you get to visit with such pristine settings. The fragrance in the air is so natural.....
