DMM throw hook.

More hookin' in the forest of Southeast Ohio.

I've been experimenting with a rope wrench set-up. Not quite dialed in yet. I like the idea of an hitch independent tether but I can't seem to find a connector that works well with the tether and the hitchhiker pulley. Any suggestions?

Nice climb and technically it was a thing of beauty. I aspire to be as good a climber as you are. As for your question, check this out.

Bob Bob, I have used an extra Rope Wrench Slic Pin to attach the tether to the top hole of the Hitch Climber pulley. I found some ordinary washers that are just the right size to fit the Slic Pin on both ends to hold it in place. To prevent dropping the washers, I drilled a hole in them just big enough for a short piece of throwline to keep them together. So, if I need to convert to moving rope, for example, I can remove the end washer and let it dangle while I remove the Slic Pin and then the Rope Wrench without touching the hitch carabiner. I have a double-eye tether that fits just fine, but I also have another one with eyes that are a little too thick to fit on the Slic Pin, so be aware. The Slic Pin for the Rope Runner is, I believe, a little longer and has more room for thicker tether eyes, but it also sticks out farther and may interfere with the legs of your hitch cord.

Thanks for the kind words John@TreeXP. I have to admit that video editing can make almost anyone look like a great climber. I've been thinking about putting together a DMM Captain Hook bloopers video that would include the countless missed throws, hopeless tangles and rough language that often gets edited out.

Thanks for the suggestion on the carabiner.
I just ordered a Captain Hook with the rope installed. I am looking forward to finding uses for it in the tree!

Thanks for the suggestion misfit. What diameter hitch cord are you using with the Rope Wrench Slic pin?

I probably wasn't clear enough in my description, so maybe a picture is in order. The hitch cord does not touch the Rope Wrench at all. The hitch is connected via carabiner to the lowest hole in the Hitch Climber pulley. The Rope Wrench is NOT connected at that carabiner, because I want to keep it independent. I attach the Rope Wrench with an extra Slic Pin at the top hole of the pulley. That way I can take it off without touching the hitch.

You are not going to be disappointed! It's a lot of fun and very useful for various things.
I LOVE mine. It is easy to get used to tossing and retrieving it. You can flip it back off a limb very quickly once you get the hang of it. I have also been using it with one of those collapsible poles that extends about 9 or 10 feet with a little hook on the end, to hoist the hook up above me and hook a limb in order to climb past my initial TIP. Then move the TIP up and repeat. This works for me in cedars and similar trees where there are too many limbs in the way to just toss anything up. Great for quick positioning sideways too.

Where can I find a pole like that?

I bought it at WesSpur. It probably would be in their catalogue. Collapsed length is a couple feet or less, and extends to maybe nine or so. Really handy to have hanging on the belt if you need to reach sideways for a throw-line or a rope out of reach, or lift something up like a throw bag or the hook.

I have one. I find it useful when setting lines from a bucket truck. also good for pulling smallish branches off roofs from bucket. I have used it in the tree but I do find it a bit cumbersome getting around in the canopy with it on my gear loops.

I put my Trango Cinch on the 10mm Sirius line that comes with the hook, worked great as a progress capture and made the hook functional as a kind of positioning lanyard in certain situations.

Bought a used Trango Cinch and put it to work today with Captain.
Fell instantly in love with it.
Such a basic and simple device but so effective.
Will be using the hook more often from here on out.
Thanks AJ for your post.
Didn't know it existed until seeing it here.

It's so sad Trango took it off the market. Apparently, if you were especially dumb, you could use it upside down or something while belaying, and drop your climber on his/her head. They should have just re-marketed it as a lanyard adjuster. I'd like to have another one... or two... of them.

Glad that's working out for you!

Here's some brutal news [joke], The Adjustable Compact Bulldog Bone is to-date the best device I've used with the Sirius 10mm on the Hook. The Rope Runner is "very not bad" but even when the bird is adjusted down tight as possible, with typical wear on the upper friction axle, it will slip. The adjustable Bone bird adjustment goes smaller. I say brutal news because your Hook kit is starting to get very expensive if you add the Bone in. If you use the Hook frequently for work, the Bone investment is worth it, especially because it's midline attachable and can play a bunch of different roles in your climbing.

All that said the Cinch is so light and small, it's a pleasure to use. The inconvenience is when you've got enough load on the Hook, it's nice to have a multicender on there. With the Cinch if you add a quick RADS with a hitch cord or Petzl Microcender you have the same functionality, just adds a little time into the equation, can disrupt your flow while working.

Your not kidding. I asked Gorden about the Stubby Bone and was super excited to buy one until I he told me the price.
I know he puts allot of time into these things but I got a bad case of "Sticker Shock" for something that requires signing a disclaimer to purchase.
Ah, maybe one day.
Wish he would have a decent sale once in a while for us poor boys.

I can't find the post but somewhere in this thread I mentioned that I had to stop using my Rope Runner on my 10mm Reep Schnur Hook line because it started slipping. I believe I said I had the bird bollard tightened all the way down. Turns out that was lazy fake news, I had the bird all the way open when the Reep Schnur started slipping with typical bollard wear. Duh. Anyway, closed the bollard up a little and back in business, RR functioning very well with the Hook. I use the Hook frequently, same story, I can usually cover a broadleaf crown prune with one SRS rope position, the Hook lets me reach across quickly and move around the crown efficiently without wasting a bunch of time going up and down individual leaders. This includes covering multiple trees from one rope setting if the trees are reasonably close together.

Oh, another thing, I'm effectively one-eyed these days, Hook throwing was the last thing to come back, throwing and setting ropes from the ground is now going well. Hook throwing is now going very well, accuracy and distance all good. the human brain is amazing ;-)
