DMM throw hook.

Huh, earliest reference I can find for a "hook" by googleing is 2015. I see grapples long before that, 2010 for one.

Either way I should have been using both of them long ago, I just bought a grapple a year ago after seeing it in a Reg vid.

Funny, I remember going through that thread before I went to buy a grapple and deciding I most wanted one I had seen in the thread, black military version. But I never registered seeing the Epple Hook there. The DMM had a short vid or pics or something early on and I could instantly SEE how I could use that often to make more money more easily.

Thanks for putting that up Levi.

@Reg issue with that set up is the wt is hanging and if slack is brought into the set up the grapple can be lost and climber can fall. I prefer static load on system at all times. Just something I have experienced for you all to consider. Happy Friday (y)
Tommy. It's never happened. Nor is it likely. The line is always loaded throughout the transfer.

Any updates when the DMM hook will be available or price? I have serious concerns about using it for moving from tree to tree where the consequences of it slipping loose would be serious, but I'd love to play around with it for moving around within the tree and for setting it out ahead of me for those long, tricky limb walks. I do wonder though if it'll stay set good on limb walks since when walking the limb, the rope tension may not stay constant and completely loaded?

C, welcome to TreeBuzz. Don't know if you have come across this yet but Reg who posts a lot of videos mentioned one important trick when transferring from one tree to another. Throw the hook over one crotch and allow it to drop down and hook a limb below that crotch. That way, when transferring, the position of hook remains the same reducing chance of slipping off limb and mechanical damage to same.

Thanks for the welcome Merle. Yes, I seen that discussion and it makes sense. I look forward to playing around with one of these. Maybe they'll be available soon and I hope they're not too pricey.

The target tree had an awful bent top so it was decided to reduce it slightly with a view to maintaining the new height at 3 year intervals. Grand firs are notorious out here for producing weighty tops that inevitably fail. Their growth rate is phenomenal.

The branches in the very tops are brittle, but this technique produced 3 points of contact, that being the line-redirect, and 2 of the hooks on two separate branches. So it was a safe transfer. The throw was probably 25 feet but the transfer much less by the time Id cinched up the lines. Thats how its done here in BC. No guessing or speculation of what may or may not work.
Wrong setting on the ground camera, which is why it looks all squashed. Sorry. Tree looks passable at least.

Its a company called Gregory. Saw it by chance in a discount store. I use it for my lanyard.

Great work and photos Reg. How often do you get a sunny day like that where you live?
Hey Levi, fancy seeing you here.

That was a mere 30 minute respite. It lashed down again thereafter and has each day since. You can see a rainbow in pic 5. But come late spring/ summer it'll be bone dry for months on end.

If my online research is correct the 'Captain's nose hook opening (90mm) is 20mm smaller than the 'Epple's (110mm). The Captain is rated at 18kn (not ppe), whereas the Epple isn't rated at all. Captain also has adjustable nose weight.

Might be able to get the Captain (on it's own) here:

At TreeStuff - Captain Kit is $275 (works out at $383 CAD - excluding shipping). I can't justify that to myself right now - no way.

If someone who has used throw hooks (maybe even Epple) - get's a hold of a Captain - I'd love to hear their review/comparison.

I was gonna order one of these to try out as soon as I could, but with the kit being $275, I'll have to wait for Treestuff to get just the hooks in. Hopefully they will be a lot cheaper than the kit. The link above makes me think they'll be around $150, which is still a little pricey to me, but definitely better than $275 for the kit.
