Compact Bulldog Bone

Pretty sure mike powers tried that tending location though shorter than in pic above pages ago . I've used that spot as well with just a piece of dynemma bungee. I actually prefer it up the back of the spine ,but being as bungee stretches it ends up in same location whilst tending just on outside of arms not inside .

If you look carefully at the picture, you can see a small white dot on the top arm in between the two upper links. I drilled a hole there and slipped in a small steel shaft. That is were the tether is anchored so it lifts just the arms, independent of the spine.

Similar, but I think since he has connected it to the upper arms and not the spine location like I did, it changes the dynamics a bit, though I have no idea how much. This way might even be better. I'll be hoping to hear more after more testing is done. Sweet!

hahah, beat me to it by seconds

I think Davids placement is the best yet, Not only is it well placed above the bottom pivot, but as he said it keeps the upper arm engaged on ascent and forces the friction there onto the roller while ascending. Maybe David can shed some light on if it tends to cause the Bone to release if weigh is transfered there inadvertently.

Gordon, I am not sure this is what you are asking, but I have tried some unconscious climber lean backs and the BDB did not release.

Hahaha!!! Has anyone else besides treegongfu and I tried this tether location? I think it is superb! As the BDB advances smoothly up the rope the upper arms are pre-set to instantly engage, no set back.

ML, I also think Vortex is the best rope out there for tree work. The BDB works fine with the small bollard if your rope is new and slick, or no bollard if are using an older piece that is less slick.
Supposedly Samson is working on the next big thing in climbing ropes as we speak. Did they show anything new in Hartford at the expo?

David Yes, that is my concern. It may be that any backwards pressure at that tending point would cause an upward torque on the upper arm, which would be a good thing.
How about if the tending strap twisted and came down beside the arm, rather than behind the spine?

I'm thinking about doing exactly what you have done, but making the tether with bungee cord to a ring. I have a feeling that tending point is optimal (also, using static chest harness/sash style). Gives the system that tad bit of forgiveness that I have always liked.

I haven't tried that yet but I can tell you it would be hard to accomplish by accident. Any time the tether is pulled on it weather vanes off the rope so it has a natural tendency to stay properly aligned.

It has passed the flopping fish test, leaning with force to all sides. The bungee should help with confidence in the bone releasing. The tube keeps the whole tether erect and the bungee, a bit of forgiveness in tending. Will test it truly on Monday.

Really enjoy the things I use the bone for because of how the bone is so quick to deploy. had it on my saddle today while doing a removal ddrt with a hitchclimber, and decided i wanted to double crotch to deal with one set of cuts. carabiner on the ropes end, put the rope thru the bone, boom.
got to the logs, ditched the hitchclimber and cordage, went with a cinching anchor on the stem, rope thru bone, clip into my belt, worked the spar.
a lot of things i do with the bone i can / did without it, its just much faster and more enjoyable

trying to get proficient enough with it to use it all the time at work.
i try to focus on getting something done as fast as possible (safely) and this focus gets disrupted when using new toys such as the bone, specifically in moments where, i dont want to say uncomfortable, but lets just call it, less than comfortable.
the DRT deal is sweet with it, but i mentioned on that thread, the few times ive played with it i was running the bone on one and a hitchclimber system on the other, so maybe a little different then what others are trying
