Care of Trees / Davey?

I'm just gonna sit back on my heels, keep quiet and see what the future holds. I have worked for Davey and Currently work for TCOT. Both treated me well, if it turns out I'm not happy with my situation I will leave and take my skills and gear elsewhere. I suggest anyone (the new guys making such a fuss in out beautiful internet home) who is unhappy with TCOT or Davey to take a hike and find someplace else to work and leave it at that.

To all of you bickering at each other, get over it, what happened in the past happened... So unless you know Doc Brown and he pulls up in the Dalorean saying "we don't need roads where we are going" and can take you back in time to fix every little thing that went wrong, then shut the hel* up.

New to the board. I agree with waiting it out or if you are not happy look elsewhere. There is a lot of opportunity out there. The uncertainty of the future can be a scary thing and hate to lose a lot of good employees before we see what happens.

Daniel Van Starrenburg (owner of Sav-A-Tree) has got to be laughing his A$$ off.

The CFO quite 5 years too late!

This is obviously a touchy subject for all of those involved. One thing I can't agree with is talking about who drives what and who owns what. If you were the one taking all of the risks that people like John H. has taken, and sacraficed so much time and effort building a company like he has, why shouldn't he be able to buy whatever he feels like buying? If I worked under him I would look at his success as a positive thing and that I too might share a piece of that. Why waste time and energy being jealous?

Not trying to respond to any one comment or person here. Just adding a thought.

He can drive anything he wants.... god (and his family) knows that!

He did earn it... and sacrificed a lot!

BUT DON'T SAY (AND ADVERTISE TO EMPLOYEES AND POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES) THAT THEY ARE AN EMPLOYEE OWNED CO. AND THEN TURN AROUND, WITH NO WARNING MIND YOU, AND ANNOUNCE ....SORRY I'M SELLING OUT BECAUSE JAMISON COULD NOT GET THE JOB DONE.

ESOP is huge in an industry where even a 401k is factored into the decision to go with a company.

FOLKS........ CAREER MINDED PEOPLE, THAT ELECTED TO STAY WITH TCOT, JUST GOT SCREWED AND NO CAN SEE IT.

Sorry about the rant but John, SCOTT!, AND the useless (unaccountable) managers that they were stuck with will never feel that pain...

JUST THE STIGMA

Hi Folks,

I heard about this website at work and decided to check it out. After reading all the posts, I am amazed at some of the garbage that is being passed off as fact. And I find the correlation between misinformation and anonymous posters very interesting. There are several comments I read that I would like to address:

A) 1% profit. This is understated to say the least. In fact, the last two years we have seen record profits. Since TCOT is still a private company, I'm not at liberty to be more specific, but I can assure you as Vice President/Controller of TCOT, 1% is incorrect.

B) $30 million loan. The amount is utter nonsense and I don't beleive we would have had a problem making that proposal work.

C. The washing machine guy. A good manager is a good manager. Period. It doesn't matter where he or she came from. In the short time since this "washing machine guy" came to work for us, I've seen nothing but improvement in his area.

D. The BMW SUV. ??? I park in the same parking lot as all the other vice presidents (with the exception of the other regional offices) and I can state unequivocally that there are no BMW SUV's, black or otherwise. If anybody owns one, it's not on the company's dime.

E. The sleeping managers. I start work at 6-6:15 and there are several other co-workers who are there at the same time. And we are not asleep.

F. Poor decision making and mismanagement. I have been with TCOT for almost 30 years. When I started, we had only 30 or so employees. We are now around 500. And as mentioned above, we are coming off two consecutive record years with respect to profits. Yes, every leader will make mistakes along the way, but I would say this is a pretty good track record and certainly not the stuff of poor decisions and mismanagement.

I could go on but I have better things to do.

For all us TCOT people, I realize this merger is causing a lot of anxiety (it is for me too), but please, if you're going to bash someone, kindly back it up with some facts and have the decency to attach your name to it. And if you're going to spout facts, get it right.

Stepping off the soap box now.

D.B.

All right, straight from the Crystal Palace!!! Good to hear your opinion Dan. I don't think it will change these attitudes though.

then why was there a freeze on raises?

Freeze on raises? Where did that come from? That was a rumor that had been dispelled I thought. Funny how rumors grow and grow. Raises are based on performance and PEP. Advancing in your PEP level is one way to increase your pay scale.

Was your district hitting their numbers and contribution rates as far as the gain share goes?

When I go in for a review and I am told "there is a freeze on raises for right now" there is no freakin myth about it. Everyone wonders why we lose climbers to asplundh, autumn, bartlett, davey etc and why we are so short on our employee numbers...and the simple answer is those guys pay more while we don't use our record profits to give raises, but hire more overhead in the form of regional recruiters. Although one thing i do really like about working for TCOT is they are careful with who they hire. They are pretty picky for the most part and actually try not to hire the dead beats and undedicated. Where as the other guys will fill their ranks and close their eyes just as long as the job gets done. (I know that from first hand experience as well)

As far as PEP...if you go up in PEP, then you get the old "well you're already at the top of the payscale for that level already so if you go up one more level then we can work a raise in"

Please spare me.

and i work in west chicago so we are always at the top few offices....if not the top.

To say the sale of TCOT makes me nervous every day is a gross understatement. I am uncomfortable with the idea of working for Davey, I just don't feel good about the company. When i go into work I have to remind myself that I am doing this job because I love climbing and taking care of trees. Nothing compares to the rush and sense of purpose that comes with this profession....imo. So I will keep doing it as best I can and I will wait to see what life presents me with here in the next few months.

In Response to What Dan had said in a few of his comments.

A) 1% profit. This is understated to say the least. In fact, the last two years we have seen record profits. Since TCOT is still a private company, I'm not at liberty to be more specific, but I can assure you as Vice President/Controller of TCOT, 1% is incorrect.

I would agree with this statement. We have had a recocrd number the past 2 years hence the reason for the sale. I mean who's going to buy a company thats losing money. However this was all from the hard work and dedication that the field staff had put in. In mid June of last year there was a freeze on raises and overtime due to our fearless leaders going on there winter pow wow in Orlando golfing and eating lobster and steak for a week.

Am I wrong about this Dan????

B) $30 million loan. The amount is utter nonsense and I don't beleive we would have had a problem making that proposal work

Then what happenend?

Dan This statement is bull and coming from the guy who pays the bills for TCOT you should know better.

D. The BMW SUV. ??? I park in the same parking lot as all the other vice presidents (with the exception of the other regional offices) and I can state unequivocally that there are no BMW SUV's, black or otherwise. If anybody owns one, it's not on the company's dime.

Kenny Clear is driving a 2007 BMW X5 which is black, loaded to the hill w/ remote car starter and even has a heated steering wheel.

Do some research on this one and get back to us.

E. The sleeping managers. I start work at 6-6:15 and there are several other co-workers who are there at the same time. And we are not asleep.

This is bull as well, if there not sleeping then there home or sitting in the office all day. Look at the sales reports from the managers and with the exception of maybe 3 company wide there numbers suck. They are 100% over head to "US"

What the hell do you care your retiring at the end of the year anyway.. The field employees busted there backsides to get the company to where it is now, we are a company who has over 18% overhead, (I know Im wrong about this too) look at the numbers. With that much over head us hard working stiffs have to pick up the slack. It was mandantory for us to not take time off around the Holidays so we can bring the year in strong (acording to Scott) just to find out now that we did all that to have the carpet pulled from under our feet. Great.. So I gave up time with my Family to go to work and help the company I believed it to get screewed. GREAT
