Cabling Question

Too often we think that we "have" to do something radical when something simple is all that's needed.

Like others have written, simple things like slight crown reduction, advise the client that we're reducing but not eliminating the risk are simple things. Heck, just considering cabling instead of just removing is a simpler approach.

I know what Justin is talking about when he references how a tree has grown and looking toward the future. Just because something has bad architecture doesn't mean that it's going to fail today. Maybe tomorrow or next month.

I think it was Mark Dunteman who has said that no matter how scary or high hazard a tree you look at, within a three block radius, in an urban environment for sure, you'll find a tree that is in worse shape than the one you're looking at right now. And so on...and so on...

Gareth is the only one so far to talk about reduction. I'd surely do some of that before drilling into such a rot-prone species. Big 10-4 on the lightning system too, if NJ gets much of that.

nota, tell us more about that colorado system ok?

Hi,

is a tulip poplar suitable for reduction pruning? As far i know (and thats limited as we have not much tulips here) they respond very bad to pruning.

I would like to know whats the common practise and results you guys get on those poplars and if there are species specific do's or dont's.

Regards Ronald

Well, we went there this morning to complete all of the work. As for the Tulip, it was mainly deadwood removal with a few limbs removed on the leaning side. Then, two dynamic cables were installed at around 75'. I don't think that my "after" pics were very good, but I'll see after I get them onto the computer. Thanks for the discussion.

[/ QUOTE ]sounds like a reasonable reduction approach. Ronald, tuliptrees have a bad reputation for rotting, well-deserved. I've rarely shortened a stem on one, but often shorten or remove sprawling branches.
