    24 strand rope vs 16

arbormaster (16 strand) is too stretchy for SRT unless you are working something smaller like a walnut orchard, in which case it is pretty nice. i'd like some vortex when i get back to that orchard. my arbormaster is old and mellow now, no climbing.

Pruning/cabling now vs pine pitch canker risk?

I found the decay - cambial dieback from a 5 inch branch removed near the base of the stem long ago. hollow elbow indeed. the drooping stem is right above a small ditch and culvert, doesn't have any major roots going on because of the culvert. I took some weight out and rigged a temporary rope...

Pruning/cabling now vs pine pitch canker risk?

yep my sense is that the weight needs to come off despite pine pitch canker risk. possible damage to part of the tree versus loss of the stem leading to loss of the tree. Pine pitch canker I have seen hasn't been too bad. that one stem comes out of the base horizontally and then makes a slow 70...

Pruning/cabling now vs pine pitch canker risk?

ahoy Buzz, went and looked at a client's tree today. They call it a coastal pine, but I think it may be a japanese black pine. I haven't ever ID'ed it. Anyhow, multi-stemmed, stems too long w/o good lower branches to ever cut back to due to many pruning decisions taken long before my time...

    New Tribe Onyx Harness

great review, Nick. looking forward to this harness. i've been trying to decide between the TM and the Sequoia for my next. But this just went to the top o the list. when you don't know what to do, sometimes the answer is nothing. with technology, something new will often come out in the...

    slick pin for Wrench ZK1?

ZK1 pin ain't on the website no more. i, too, would be happy to purchase a slic pin for ZK1. i have one of those push-button ones that i got from mcmaster-carr before the slic was on the scene. but the slic is way more slic. and cheap. i'm on ZK2 now (heck YES) but is good to have the ZK1...

    Scarpa Kailash boots?

I have a couple pair of kailash, I like them quite a bit. THen again, all scarpa products happen to fit me perfectly. I don't know how they' d fare in gaffs, never tried that. Probably a bit light. And there are certainly stickier shoes out there for getting a grip on the wood, especially on wet...

    Sequoia srt

great info, guys, i've been in a BF2 for a long while and trying to decide between precisely these two saddles right about now i sat in a TM once, didn't even adjust anything and it was COMFY. dang. but i'm temperamentally leaning towards the light and minimal of the Sequoia. I like to leave...

    Rope Wrench/Ascender compatibility

oh wow, you really got the bolt in there!! I know this one well. Generally, lengthening the foot loop on the ascender help to keep this from happening regularly on the ascent. mostly, though, it is just something to look out for, a characteristic of the RW/Futura combo. You have to remember to...

What can a contract climber make in Northern CA?

heehee - you don't need a license for *that*! or a chain saw, neither ;-) but you guys up in WA and BC wouldn't know anything about that, would you?

I need a favor...rope damage to cambium or bark

an example pittosporum - done with the main growth flush but not by much. small wood, too. note sugoi tip for scale. i knew i was taking this small top out. so didn't protect it with a sleeve. it's base tie SRT rope went thru some side branches on the way up to the TIP, so hit the TIP at an...

    Mobile Internet service

I had a verizon wireless USB modem up til about 3 years ago, worked amazingly well. i was very impressed. at the time, it was the best way to get high speed internet where we lived, but we took it on the road quite a bit. i think we paid 60/mo with it. service was great anywhere you had a phone...

Do you sweat like a pig at work?

good find on that article, jomoco. it is funny how little we know about our own nutrition I'm a big fan of electrolyte products while working (or hiking or skiing) drink mixes: vitalyte and cyto-max are great, available at the ol' REI Clif Shot Bloks - little sugary gel "candies" with...

What can a contract climber make in Northern CA?

Oh Bix - that *is* a crazy story. funny, in my last post I was about to make a dig that "all they do with the contractor's money is spend it on stings on non-contractors" but i left it out because I didn't want to be complainin'. But i hear about those stings quite a bit. Also, you not only...

    SRT Cinch Discussion

I like the BOAB for advancing a small rope above me on the way to the main TIP. it doubles as a lightweight throwing knot. i'm really starting to like the sound of the butterfly/maillon choke that you leave tied at the base for the main TIP. Backups aplenty, but harder to remove than a base...

What can a contract climber make in Northern CA?

Bixler, I ain't a lawyer, and have never talked to one about contract climbing in CA. I'm just guessing from what I've read and what my insurance agent has told me. I don't contract climb for anyone, i'm just plain old self-employed sole proprietor and do smaller work, no employees. And, yes...

What can a contract climber make in Northern CA?

yeah - i think jomoco's guess is about right. if you were north of the bay area, I think the numbers would be lower. I think that you would need to get a contractor's license so you could have effective insurance as a contract climber. california contractor's license takes some work...

    Cali C0ntractors license?

egads - i thought i had to learn all the building stuff at first, glad i don't. i have met a few building contractors here that are incredulous that i have to have any sort of contractor's license at all. FUnny, it isn't the license that is really important for everyone, it is the insurance...

    Cali C0ntractors license?

Yeah - the math and the numbers are all of over, I think. Business management practices, California Labor Law, Mechanics Liens. I have a Law manual I borrowed from a friend who is a landscape contractor (they have to test on Trade skills as well.) I've studied a bunch and I'm just going to take...
