Rec Climbing in Oregon in August ??

I'm not much of a recreational climber, but, there are some great big trees of all variety in very urban, high traffic areas in Portland. Bagging those arboreal summits requires stealth, timing, and savvy... and a headlamp with a red lens. Those unauthorized ascents were lot cooler and more fun...

One Handing a Top Handle Chain Saw? Yes or No

Generally I use two hands on the saw, but after reading this thread, I one-handed the saw several times today. I kept hoping someone from some agency would come take my crew away and kick me out of the industry permanently, but they didn't. I cried all the way home, big hot tears of frustration.

FS well used wesco highliners, re-soled.

I have a pair of Wesco Highliners, they were recently re-soled. 16", black, used. I don't have foot rot, toe-jam, or anything gnarly like that. 10.5D. PM me if you're interested and name your price. They worked great in the soggy woods of Western Oregon. In AZ, where it's been over 100 for...

I saw a couple of your employees took courses at CCC. Is John Buttrell still teaching those?

One Handing a Top Handle Chain Saw? Yes or No

10 pages? Here, let me sum it up for some of you... in three sentences: Some folks one hand all the time, they think it's great! Some folks never one hand at all, they think it's bad! Some folks one-hand sometimes. They look left, and look right, and then go ahead. They feel it's wrong, but...

Suckers - What do you tell the client?

I tell the clients "Yep, better bring them tall trees down, might crush yer house this winter!" Those suckers fall for it every time!

COW HITCH - ISA vs. TCIA

That was a great pic! I'm not talking about that sling and stuff, either. Look in the background... folding table, lawn chair, garbage can with a bottle underneath it... Now that's a jobsite set-up I can get behind! I brought the blender, where can I set these Jimmy Buffett CD's!? Hell...

    Self-rescue from a bucket

@ Tony: Thanks! @niceviews: whatever the contract/situation requires. I have used a bucket belt and tether, and a full body harness and tether. Personally, I don't mind the full harness at all. The only time I would wear my saddle is when I had a to climb out of the bucket.

    Self-rescue from a bucket

I'm in a bucket anywhere from 10 hours to 40 hours a week, and have been for years. This thread seems crazy to me. What the hell are you people doing out there? Pre-trip inspection. Pre-work boom inspection. Pre-work operation from lower controls. Follow all manufacturer recommendations...

    Getting your paper.

When I worked in a vocational training capacity, it was brought to my attention that residential/commercial tree workers and utility tree workers were not recognized in Federal documents as "Skilled Labor" trades. Many tree workers are self taught, or taught on the job by self-taught coworkers...

best part of line clearance? Knockin' on doors

Re: best part of line clearance? Knockin\' on doors Here's a new experience for me... I was in a "long boom" configuration, slipped between the triplex and cable, right up next to the pole with it's transformer, fuses, multiple service drops, etc... y'know, all key-holed back in under the...

COW HITCH - ISA vs. TCIA

Personally, I don't care for either knot. Using those systems means I'm blocking down large wood, and that really cuts into chatting and margarita time. A blender and a surfboard, now that's some activity worth obsessing about!

best part of line clearance? Knockin' on doors

Re: best part of line clearance? Knockin\' on doors [ QUOTE ] Good point! how do you guys handle the homes that are awash in "excrement". Right now I either walk away from it unless it's a pressing issue to clear up. In that case we drop the debris in the yard and leave it for the homeowner to...

Tree Risk and Assessment Certification Exam

I went through with one of the first few groups in the PNW. I certainly thought it was more pertinent and interesting than most of the other stuff I've done through the ISA. I did not find the test challenging. Fortunately the company I worked for at the time paid the substantial tab... I'd...

    buying a range finder/tree height

those "short 130' pines" and their brobdingnagian brethren seem pretty cool...until you've worked enough of them. The novelty wears off fast. Especially if you have to rig one down over a three phase! I assumed macroC was hip to the Suunto clinometer...

    buying a range finder/tree height

Bushnell makes a number of range finders around that price that get good reviews. A lot of golfers use range finders that are good to 5 or 6 hundred yards. I have used a Leica rangefinder for long distance shooting, it gives accurate readings out past 1000yds, but a used unit would run about...

    Getting back into shape. Advice?

I'm 5'11", and I was up to 214. I started eating only what struck me as healthy... bananas, tuna, salmon, oranges, green beans. and only occasionally eating stuff that struck me as unhealthy... pecan pie, mochas, hamburgers, soda pop. I quit my training position and got a job trimming for a...
