Frax, I appreciate your honesty as well... just one thing you said seems to be a bit over my head... "Two hands 99% of the time just feels better for me and gives me the degree of control I'm comfortable with. I'm not motivated by it being a rule except to the extent an employer would require it."
...it's the second sentence that i'm finding a hard time understanding. Should the employer have the freedom of saying yes or no (to one-handling)... after all it's his comp insurance or image, that may be affected?

Two hands on the saw, unless you choose otherwise!

[/ QUOTE ]

That's what I'm saying. If the employer required it, then that's what I'd stick to unless....(there is always an 'unless' for those who can exercise some judgement)... there was absolutely no other safe option, like in X's scenario. (for me, that's the 1%).

Don't you mean one finger up, four fingers down?

It's Rigg's subtly saying that he too is a one handed trimsaw wielding outlaw!

One hand up, four fingers down with a nice firm grip eh Riggs?

Generally I use two hands on the saw, but after reading this thread, I one-handed the saw several times today. I kept hoping someone from some agency would come take my crew away and kick me out of the industry permanently, but they didn't.
I cried all the way home, big hot tears of frustration.

And Riggs makes no sense at all.

I've always looked at using a saw one handed as nothing more than a risk that I choose to accept, as I feel it is reasonably manageable and worthwhile, just like many other issues I run into daily. If you start asking yourself "Is X safer than Y?" about everything, and choosing the safest option, its a cascade into paralysis (and you'll never leave your home). We all make choices based on our own comfort levels (some of us choose to make ourselves uncomfortable now and then too). It's easy to point to accidents happening, but have you tallied up the number of one-handed cuts made daily that don't result in injury?

Rules can't save you in this line of work, you need your own safety mechanisms (alertness, endurance, intelligence) to keep you alive and well.

Nice dig Reg.

Today, I lowered the bucket down close to the ground to cut up some wood on the ground. I got out of the bucket and used the hydraulic stick saw with one hand. I didn't wear chaps.

Then, for a nutty joke, I started acting like the stick saw had come alive like a tentacle from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. It was awesome, I battled and beat the beast... with one hand!!

This is another man cuts branch... branch falls to ground video..

in real time (no editing)... 5 minutes to take this storm damaged limb off a roof with the bucket and without one handing

I was grinding stumps the other day and saw a climber I've known for a couple years. He one hands over 90% of his cuts.. Its needless.. then came across this old footage today and thought of this thread..

There's two kinds of one handing... one makes you crazy and the other seems like a "good idea at the time"..

Hard to define though... kinda like pornography.. you know it when you see it..

I've seen youtube videos of newbies with poor body positioning, unnecessarily one handing the saw over their heads like they were waving a flag.

come to mind..

Wow, the Aerial Arborist... What a joke. It's amazing he is still alive.. I've seen a few of his videos where he puts himself in bad situations. Clearly he doesn't think ahead... Lol... And the second video they had the rope ran a little different than I've seen on any porty... To each his own I guess... Lol. One handing is totally acceptable in certain situations ..

I always find myself using one hand on just about any saw.Was trained by a old logger so it stuck. My top hand saw is ran one handed all the time.If I am spured in to a tree I use one hand on whatever saw I'm running with my left hand on the tree.I was trained this way always use my felling dogs.Dig them in pray for the best.Even if you use two hands you can never say the saw is not going to bite you!
