Great thread...I would have commented sooner but I have been up in the N.Cascades hiking and looking at 1000-1500+ year old trees (larch and white bark pine)...that have never had any "help" from humans.
As has Tom I have looked for some good research on this subject without success. IMO we...
There is a better method "sheet mulching" to remove turf that is easy and will lead to better soil conditions pretty fast.
I've watched folks for years as they hack and pull up turf and shake out a bit of soil and then toss away decades of useful organic biomass. If fine tree roots are around...
I think that these prices are the future.
Buggin me even more as I was finally buying biodiesel for the same or even lower price than petroleum diesel but now paid $4.90 for 100g of bio this week! Yikes!
BTW I remember gas in the .25 a gallon range as a kid in NY.

Re: I\'m stumped by an oak
How many of you know of documented fatalities where the victime was in a house?
I am curious as I have not heard of one in all my years out here in the PNW. Close calls yes...injuries...rare but there....but fatalities?
The tree in question here has a lot of canopy...
I have been dithering about sharing what happened to me. Thanks to Tom D. and others for encouraging me to post it.
In early November 2007 I fell 20' out of a willow tree to the ground. I have...I think...survived with no permanent damage.
I made an error in judgement and, as I was entering...
I have looked into using a heli twice here in Seattle.
Requirements to evacuate the entire neighborhood etc made it unrealistic.
I spent some time watching salvage logging in fire areas near Leavenworth WA. It was wild...they were using some very funky old helicopters... just flying out logs.
Re: good load bearing knot for joining two lines??
I learned the knot you are calling a zeppelin form mountaineer Wilie Unsoeld back in 1973. He called it the Hunter's Bend. Regardless of the name it is a great knot.
I showed this to Rip and Ken (Arbormaster) years ago and they had never seen...

For me - Musket balls in old elms coming down in the early 70's in Mamaroneck NY. By the ring counts some from civil war era. Lots of battles in the area.
As a kid I used to play with my plastic army guys in trees that we climbed. We left them...
Hi all, great thread!
I looked at Kathy's Silver maple for her client and for her prior to the decision to prune.
Yesterday I looked at the pruning so far and I think Kathy has called it well. I will look again at finish and post some pics. We will follow this tree and keep track. Plenty of...

I knocked mself on my butt with throw bag a few years back.
Now days I am reluctant to pull out my bag especially in tight quarters. I drop my bag untie and pull out the string rather than risk getting stuck or worry about runaway throw weights!
When I first got a big shot I put a big dent on...
I have also moved nests...but only birds. I never was sure that it worked.
My friend Scott Altenhoff has had a ton of experience with wildlife in trees. He has pictures of moving a cavity nest in a chunk of wood to a tree adjacent to the removal (that has the nest)...the parent birds kept...
I have been using some Amsteel ropes lately as I have been learning to do the Statics Integrated Method "tree pulling tests".
You can't use knots in this super strong rope...have to use a special thimbel with the right radius and a splice.
On one job we decided to save soe time and a thimbel...
