Black Diamond is a company that many old climbers, including myself, trust. I've had my eye on this product and will buy a couple next time I need a new locking carabiner.
I was lucky to have had this experience.
I really think that a "peak bagging mentality" with regard to tree climbing has a big downside. As Guy says "it is just an number" amazing
The trees that are a challenge to climb, and most interesting... are not always the largest.

Great dissections. Alex Shigo would love it!
Guy is right on.
Old trees seldom have tops....always decay.
Indiscriminate topping is the issue.
Decay and adaptive growth is normal for trees not altered by us.
Thanks for this post.

Hey all you wood weirdo's!
My friend Dave Hunzicker need to replace a master sawyer who is retiring.
This business Urban Hardwoods has recently come under new ownership. The job is one of a kind for the right person. Outdoors and mostly by yourself. Amazing wood every day...
Nice documentation of that tree Rog. Despite a 40' x 20" trunk that failed in the recent winds...I would have to say that basal failure was the biggest worry (~140'tall) and also the cost for the "owner" to keep her beloved tree... 10 years of maintenance estimated = to removal cost now. I...
The tree was somewhere in Everett.
Bruce and Travis Trelstad may have more details to some point.
The back story is always worth hearing. But it won't bring Kopono back.
I spoke today with a friend who knew Kopano.
I have a few more details about the technical details that resulted in the accident.
It was a crane removal. Kopano was tied into the hook. He had set up the pick and was descending to get back on the tree at the place where he would cut the piece.
He...
I heard about this just after it happened but no details.
Today heard from Chris Berg of Seattle Tree Preservation... that it was someone we both knew. Kopano P. Lopeti Died November 5th. He was 51.
I remember him as a sweet guy...a big man from the S.Pacific.
Chris heard that he rappelled off...
I just heard today that Bob passed.
He was an inspiration to me and many others.
He worked tirelessly to make the world a better place.
The family is having a celebration of his life at the Morton Arboretum July 6.
These are the details from the family:
Bob Wulkowicz Memorial
Saturday, July...
Hello all,
I have been in touch with Herlwyn’s Daughter Nina.
She got his gear back from the police. Nina is familiar with her Dad’s gear and she is quite sure that nothing failed.
Herlwyn was working installing some kind of wiring in the tree. He was working off his spurs. He had finished...
It saddens me to tell you all that my friend Herlwyn Lutz died in a 50' fall from a tree while working on Orcas Thursday. http://www.islandssounder.com/news/137309023.html
Herlwyn was 77 years old. He was a charming man, and a life long climber, with many friends.
He was a member of ISA a CA...
Hello Treebuzzers!
The test was made with a Fakopp "Arborsonic" tomograph.
I have used the Picus tool as well as the Arbortom. Tree Solutions went with the Fakopp tool which is a great field tool.
The company is from Hungary and we have enjoyed working with them. They have been in the timber...
I think Mario's worry about the sun might be less of a worry in your location. I know the place well. The tree is exposed and not a dense canopy. Sunscald is unlikely.
I have seen very few madrone lateral branch failures in live trees. As you point out the species is the master of defying...
Hi Sean,
I think it will depend on the vigor of the tree. Last winter seems to have been a tough one for Arbutus. The species is a vigorous sprouter and cutting them back will often release buds.
Generally a low risk for breaking but that sounds like a big branch...which historic house? Can you...
Thanks for this account!
Liriodendron's were a challenging tree when I was learning to climb in NY in the 70's...those giant limbs were intimidating to get over! We have some monsters growing here in Seattle.
I swear by the Arborwear tech pants...basically my main pants... cotton sucks in comparison. They wear like iron...but... as with most tech fibre gear...watch out for flame!
You don't look like a gear geek in them as you do with some of the high teck climbing pants.
I recently met a guy my age...
Arborist Zeb Haney reports that the fellow was working off a rigging line using a figure 8. Zeb say his soft lock failed and he went down.
Lots of interest here as the crane regs are currently under discussion...and the fact that a crane was involved may influence decisions...
I did not know this fellow personally. A sad day for his family and friends. Few details in this article. Sounds like he was working off the hook...

This picture is taken on Cortes Island BC.
I was collecting tissue samples from Fometopsis officianalis for my friend Paul Stamets.
The best part of this story is that I first laid eyes on this tree (Trude's fir) in 1973 while exploring BC with a college pal in a VW bus! That makes the conk at...
