[ QUOTE ] while your bowline at best has a 40% reduction [www.allaboutknots.com/html/8_strength.html; at worst in a running or choked configuration? well lets use some conservative numbers at a 40% reduction in efficiency on a 1000 pound test line is a 600lbs working load in a straight line pull...

The Zeppelin loop vs the F8 in pulls

-- some quick remarks -- [ QUOTE ] Much ado over little perhaps? [/ QUOTE ] 1) There is obervation & consideration of knots for the sake of getting a general idea of use, and that needn't delve into the nitty-gritty; ("Much ado over knotting" is one version of this. :o) 2) Then there is...

The Zeppelin loop vs the F8 in pulls

[ QUOTE ] Just to be clear, Bruce is totally against the American Death Triangle (ADT) because of the heavy loading it puts on anchors. He and I talked FTF about this not long ago. [/ QUOTE ] Just to be clearer: the presentation on the OnRope1 site against the ADT is seriously flawed...

The Zeppelin loop vs the F8 in pulls

[ QUOTE ] The F8s were F8s. They were properly tied, dressed, and lightly set. The lays of the F8 were parallel and not crossing. I used both forms of the F8, i.e. the strand bearing the force on one F8 was on top or the outside, and on the other two on the inside. Dr. Merchant, author of Life...

The Zeppelin loop vs the F8 in pulls

It should be noted that strength attributes attach properly <u>to particular shaping of particular cordage</u>, and assuming these tested-in-PMI-EZbend-rope values to indicate results in arborist cordage is reaching too far. Where are end-2-end knots most leaned into in arboriculture? (E.g...

The Zeppelin loop vs the F8 in pulls

Hey, thanks Ron! You tested two knots, but have shown us only one of them. We must wonder what <u>your</u> Fig.8 eyeknot looks like. (The unfortunate presumption is that "F8" says all one needs to know -- just go look it up, um, here or there or ... .) You also don't have a tested...

Using the constrictor as a pull down - no fear!

[ QUOTE ] Any knot/hitch can be tied in a 'slipped/slippery' fashion. That makes untieing easy. [/ QUOTE ] Not in my experience: if a knot's jammed hard, having a slipped finish is little help -- that's just part of the jam (and pulling it out, in many materials, creates a bulge at the u-turn...

What knot do you like to use for anchoring....

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] For drop hitching, I use a marline hitch instead of a marl under the running bow. Marline hitch stays more secure than a marl. [/ QUOTE ] What is the difference between a marline hitch and a marl? [/ QUOTE ] I know the difference, but am having trouble picturing the...

    Bluemoon splicing translation

Beautiful splices, B_R ! As for marking the rope, any merit to simply stitching in some dayglo pink or orange or ... thread ? *kN*

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Moray, how did you test the Grapevine bend (Dbl.Fish.)? I.p., how did you anchor the ends of the test specimen? [/ QUOTE ] As I was testing attachment knots, it was the double fisherman's loop, not the bend. One at each end of the rope, each held by a 3/4-inch steel pin. [/...

    Break Testing

[ QUOTE ] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy6Y2Xoo4Ak Any Better? Brion [/ QUOTE ] MUCH better -- beautiful! (But will it go "viral"? :o) The knot is clearly shown; the lower but not additional Half-hitch /loop part rotates, the eye legs are constant, and then at 28 sec.s comes the (partial)...

Brion, thanks for your generous offer, I accept it. PM'd. Further, I have just sent e-mail again asking the Oregon overseeing professor (of J. Hartter's thesis) about the knots that they tested (CC to J.Hartter, who hasn't replied further to my earlier query--other than to ask Who Am I?!--, and...

    Break Testing

Moray, how did you test the Grapevine bend (Dbl.Fish.)? I.p., how did you anchor the ends of the test specimen? [ QUOTE ] According to "Life on a Line", the version with the standing part (as indicated in the pic) is the correct F8. [/ QUOTE ] Which version of <u>LoaL</u> ? This is not the...

    Break Testing

[ QUOTE ] Meanwhile, have you considered my invitation to prepare and submit samples for testing? [/ QUOTE ] Yes, I've considered it, but I (and others?!) need more information. Perhaps some others here might care to try a trick or two, too. What are the specimen requirements? As we're...

    Break Testing

[ QUOTE ] When I tested several attachment knots in 5/16" Tenex (also hollow), all of them, including a rethreaded figure 8, broke below 50% nominal rope strength. A spliced eye was more than twice as strong as any of them. [/ QUOTE ] Hmm, more than twice "below 50%" presses close to 100%! But...

    Break Testing

[ QUOTE ] Hi Mark, Unfortunately, usage has different knots going by the same name here. kN's post #191257, on page 4 of this thread, has an attachment with a photo showing the knot I tested. It's the upper of two, in gray. As you'll see the end passes out and back into a Ring Hitch or Cow Hitch...

    Break Testing

[ QUOTE ] That looks just like the Water Bowline only the clove hitch is separated. Is that not right? [/ QUOTE ] That is not right: it is a COW hitch, not a Clove hitch. And the separation can be reduced. (Frankly, I think that if there was historically some "water bowline", the hitches...

    Break Testing

Allmark, your bust-the-Amsteel video shows a nice long piece now broken (somewhat) with maybe 20' towards an eye splice(?) and then a longer (?) tail. Just to be sure, is there something left that could endure some further test? (You seemed to say "no", but... .) I've found the Oregon State...

    Break Testing

[ QUOTE ] Hello again, Tested a few more Bowline variations in something of a hurry yesterday. You'll find a video of one of the tests at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpt6nxgAOEI [/ QUOTE ] Thanks much for your efforts. It's eye-opening to watch these videos (ditto for the OP's). Anyone know how they test breaking strength?

Depends what they're doing. I recall reading that there was a difference between Cordage Institute and other standards re how tensile strength was supposed to be determined -- CI wanting it to be spliced strength (perhaps on the thinking that that was the best one was going to do), and others...
