I've managed heights up to and regularly over 200' with a bigshot, but I use a slightly different technique than Richard. I prefer hand pull rather than trigger release shots, because in side-by-side tests we've seen that the triggers steal energy from the shot. The archery trigger Richard is...
The west coast is pretty great place to do tree work, though it's a rather large area(!) What makes you zero in on southern Cali? The Bay Area is quite nice, as is the PNW. In general on the west coast you should be looking at good wages for top climbers but high cost of living as well.
What...
A few more of mine. Not as cool as my others honestly, but good stuff none the less. First is from a fun rigging job, second was a habitat creation job in Mt Hood National Forest, and last is me displaying blatant disregard for the rules in Hong Kong.
Too bad we can't upload photos bigger than...
Forgot about this one. Definitely one of my favorite pics from my favorite job so far: 7 days climbing insanely huge rain trees in Ambon, Indonesia on a contract for Asia Tree Preservation. Everything about this job was epic. The pic was snapped by Ryan Lewis, who hangs around here (or used to)...
This one is also a favorite. A screen shot off my gopro which perfectly captures what it was like to work for 6 months in New Zealand: Monterrey Pine demolition on a large scale, with a beautiful backdrop.
Deevo, for the really big stuff we use crossbows but this one was only 217', so with a...
Hey Chris thanks for the shout out; that was a fun day. Funny though, that pic makes the tree look so epic when it was really pretty routine. But that's just good photography I reckon.
Towards that end this one is probably my favorite: TJ Watt snapped this pic of me on the initial ascend of Big...
This is a photo of the Klootchy Creek Spruce being pruned in the 1960s. This tree, which died in 2008, used to be the largest known tree in Oregon and a major tourist attraction. This is the one that is just off Hwy 26 when you are going to the coast from Portland, and you can still go see the...
Hey guys,
Thought you might appreciate this little teaser of a project I'm working on at the moment:
Brian is the dude in the green shirt; I'm the other one.
The whole thing will be finished sometime in 2015, and I'll definitely post it up here when I can.
Cheers
Interesting that he mentioned that sonic tomography had played a role in condemning the tree. From the before pics you can clearly see that the tree has mega taper at the base. It very well could be one of the many decayed trees that are stronger and more stable than non-decayed trees.
Way...
Also, the Hong Kong TCC dates and venue are correct but that is for 2014, this year, not 2015. The dates and venue for the 2015 HKTCC have not yet been decided on.
I found that very cool Reg. Usually my adult-onset ADHD prevents me from watching tree vids that long, but I found that entertaining the whole way through. Having worked in NZ myself and having hung out with Dan a few times I found what you had to say there pretty funny and spot on. They do...
Thanks for the kind words guys. Yeah I was pleasantly surprised at how the final product turned out.
At the time this was just a rigging job for me; our challenges were how to get 3 non-climbers into the very top of a 270' old growth douglas fir safely and with the minimum impact, on a tight...
Those are very popular in France; check out Hevea if you want to purchase some. The crampon part on the bottom of the shank is removable, I believe. Other than that they are standard climbers, and they definitely have gaffs.
Some great points on this thread. The ability to have multiple redirects and create static redirects totally changes the game, IMO as much or more than the consistent friction aspect.
Two of my biggest light-bulb moments with SRT work positioning have come in wild, tropical trees; once in...
At our recent PNW chapter TCC the judges made the decision to do what they have always done (that is, until a few years ago when ISA stepped in and told them to stop): they assessed climbing systems presented to them using their expertise. I brought my rope wrench system, using a ZK-2 on an ABR...
