Carabiner Gate - Up or Down?

This is probably a dumb question, but is it better to use a carabiner from harness to prusik loop and top rope with the hinge of the gate up or down? I never gave it a thought one way or another, but I saw a guy using a (screw) biner and he had the pivot of the gate up, so that he remembered to...

    Your Preferred Carabiners?

Not an arborist, but I do some climbing of trees and houses and stuff...I bought one of these Omega Pacific 3AL NFPA triple-autolock aluminum carabiners when I first got into climbing and really like it: https://www.amazon.com/Omega-Pacific-Mod-3AL-NFPA/dp/B017YXJ1AA Image here. It's light...

Does testing rope strength weaken it?

Thank you, Bart. Exactly what I was looking for. (Unfortunately, the parts of the rope I'm concerned about are in the middle, rather than the ends, so I'd probably need to cut the rope in half, then cut the end off one of those halves for testing.) Jeff

Does testing rope strength weaken it?

Thanks for your reply, JeffGu. I was hoping you would weigh in on this since you were so helpful on my "Roof Job" thread. I ended up making four roof anchors like those you mentioned in that thread...would like to figure out a way to leave them up there for future work, in fact...

Does testing rope strength weaken it?

OK, thanks, I appreciate the advice and patience. Just ordered some more 1/2" Yale XTC, this time in white/yellow. I like the way that XTC Fire handled.

Does testing rope strength weaken it?

Thanks, guys. I should add that I'm not trying to get anybody to say "Sure, it's fine!" -- and can't really expect more than a seat of the pants guess -- just trying to get a feel for whether people who are far more experienced than me at using ropes would use this rope for the purposes I've...

Does testing rope strength weaken it?

Thanks, fellas. I'll post a pic of some of the "worst" parts of it later. ETA: Here's some of the "worst of the worst" in the rope (nearly all of it is in better shape than this): https://i.ibb.co/Fzxttyr/rope-wear-1.jpg https://i.ibb.co/4ScQgGg/rope-wear-2.jpg I don't need the rope to have...

Roof job - FA Rope questions

Well, that's what I ended up doing, except I put an Alpine butterfly loop inline on my top rope, clipped a biner to that, and used that as my "pulley" for the rope holding the board. Felt a little strange and took some careful small-step moves, but I got the board down alive without scarring up...

Does testing rope strength weaken it?

Hey, all, I have some 1/2" 100% polyester rope (Yale XTC Fire) I would like to test to say 1000 or 1500# to make sure it's still safe to use as a top rope on roof job I'm on. If I put it on a load cell to 1500# (or picked up a 1500# object with it), would that weaken it thereafter because I...

Roof job - FA Rope questions

Still screwing around with this miserable job. Need to take down walk boards (2"x10"x12') halfway up slope on 12-pitch. Seems like it will have been easier to get them up than get them down. I don't remember it being too bad to get them up there, anyway. But I'm scratching my head on how to get...

    Damn Chiggers

I use ammonia on chigger bites. Apparently their saliva is acidic (this is what creates the subcutaneous "pipe" through your skin that continues to weep and crust for days after they bite you)...the ammonia, as a base, neutralizes the acid (and/or dissolves the "pipe") I guess and it stings, but...

Any downside to retiring my Certified Arborist/Certified Tree worker

Any way to put your certification on "hold" or "suspend"? I did that with my USCG master's ticket...that way I can renew it later on down the road without going through the rigmarole of all the testing, etc., that I went through when I got licensed the first time...

Planet of the Humans - Jeff Gibbs and Michael Moore

Yep, I've read that rabbit (and fox) populations spike and crater in a regular cycle that's 11 years long...same period as the sunspot cycle IIRC. I always wondered whether they were related. Then you wonder: How and why in the world does something like a 17-year locust evolve?

Planet of the Humans - Jeff Gibbs and Michael Moore

A lot of wildlife depends on young/early forest for habitat...whitetail deer, quail, many species. As far as deer are concerned, a mature forest only has a small fraction of the carrying capacity of a 2-year-old clearcut. I've talked to wildlife biologists in PA who say that there are huge...

    Covid Close To You

I don't know WTF their problem is, but from my desk, I can see the same six crackheads drive up and down my road probably fifteen fucking times a day, every day. Anybody wanna put odds on whether we've got CV on my road yet? WTF is wrong with people?

I'm surprised more people don't use a brace and bit. The Bell System guys used them forever on telephone poles, and I would expect them to cut through green wood like a hot knife thru butter...
