Yard signs en such.?

Ok now I know this subject has been brought a couple times on here but everything I've found is years old.
Flyers?
Doorhangers?
Direct mail?
Yard signs (I'm about to order)
And hanging yard signs on service poles?
Ooo and the big news papers?
Im getting a major whooping,im just starting out on my own this year.
I know it takes time and a lot of hard work to get a steady business moving. I don't have a bunch of cash to go out and try every marketing tool out there.im looking for one that is effective to get me rolling then let my work speak for its self.
So any info on these I'd love to read your thoughts on whats worked and what bit you in the butt. Thanks fellas
Im ordering yard signs for sure but should I put them on service poles? Does it work?

Direct mail worked for me in the start.
Leave them with something too pretty to trash.
Just do something different be memorable be creative that leaves them with a good impression of your biz.

My yard signs are cedar framed and stand on cedar post
that is placed on rebar pounded in the ground. and couple for hanging that are mirrored ali framed that I suspend from the tree in the yard.

Signs say alot about your biz. Material, fit and finish should be quatlity, not plastic and disposable.
Best of luck!

I had door hangers printed and cut.

The print said something to the effect:

Today we...your company name...worked at your neighbors: blank space for address... In addition to the work we did there we also do...list all that you do. Give me a call/email/text and I'd be happy to give you an estimate of do a consultation. Blah blah blah

As the gear was being stashed one of the workers would deliver 20-30 of them to the adjacent neighbors. This worked quite well for me.

A flyer mailout was a good way to get my business known, you can get much more info to the client than an ad in the paper. A website with good SEO (which is free if you do it yourself) is also cost effective advertising.

But so far, my best money spent was on an old trailer that I built a 12 X 8 wood frame on and had a buddy of mine print a big sign on three coroplasts. Trailer cost me 200$, 100$ of wood for the frame and I think 400$ for the actual sign. So 700$ for a huge, movable billboard.

I've found a few hi-traffic spots where I can park the trailer for a few days; friends house/business, good clients, abandonned parking lots, etc.

Makes GREAT publicity and if you get too busy you can just tow it home and park it for a while.

Timber thats what im trying to figure out...
As for the art im savvy with photoshop so it looks good...I've tried direct mail with a flyer business card and fridge magnet..Never got a call and I had hand picked the houses with deadwood close bythe houses or over there driveway...

Stay away from the newspaper. I am in my 6th year and yellow pages and website seem to be the best for me. We just had our website redone and I am amazed how many people fill out the bid request online rather than calling. We also do the local Home & Garden Show and we are generally the busiest booth.

And just a heads up SEO takes a while to see any return on that expense (if you paying someone to do it). I have been implementing SEO for the last 3-4 months and just now am I seeing phone calls from Web searches. My point being make sure you don't plan on this being your number marketing revenue source for a while.

I have postcards that put out on doors in hoods we work in. Also if you are new try a Groupon or LivingSocial deal. This has worked well for me. In the sense that I have gotten a significant increase in business but most of them are tire kickers tire kickers and they want to try to keep the bill cheap as possible.

For immediate results, blanket areas that have lots of trees with flyers/doorknockers. And by blanket I dont mean hire a plane and drop mail bags of flyers out the door, just deliver them to houses, slip them in mailboxes, hang on doors etc etc... Try to not to be an annoyance if you know what I mean.
Knocker and flyers are super cheap, and if you have kids, free to have delivered(if you can get your kids to work for free that is...lol).
As for the interenet, I agreee that it is a good thing, but some people still have no clue about the net. In fact a lot of people still have no clue, like old homeoowners that have lots of trees that need to be tended too.
The internet really depends where you live, and what kind of work you want to do. If you live in a big metro area, Id get a website, live off in the country in a rural area where word of mouth rules, Id pass on the site, for the time being, always a good idea to have one if you have the time and money, but for now, rural area, word of mouth, concentrate on simpler methods like knockers and flyers. Skip the newspaper adds, but get your name in the phone book under tree services, dont go too any great length to pay for a big add until you have the cash to spare.
Print up a good flyer, describing your services and any other information you want too provide, then pay kids to deliver them to neighbourhoods that have prospective clients.
I know several tree guys who do nothing more and work all year long.
The one guy still gets calls on flyers he handed out almost ten years ago no word of a lie, people ask him if hiss introductory special is still in effect, ten years later.
Just one method, but for direct results it is hard to beat, paper is cheap, and dont go to great lenghts, keep in mind that MOST WILL BE THROWN IN THE TRASH(dont think too much about that, but it is true) just a simple flyer with some simple info letting people know your the best guy around to get for their trees.
Best of luck to ya bud, and stay safe.
