I really appreciate all the responses, especially the input from the rope expert. I've already set this idea aside, and moved on to another project that doesn't involve life support.
But before closing out this thread, I should share something that happened many years ago, long before I had any interest in climbing.
It was my first encounter with a tree work professional, and he was about as old as I am now (75). He was getting ready to climb a tree just across the fence in the yard next door. His flipline (I didn't know what to call it then.) looked to be as old as he was, and I asked him if he ever thought about getting a new rope. He told me they made all the climbing gear really, really strong so it wouldn't be unsafe before people just got sick of looking at it. We both had a good laugh when I told him I was already getting queasy. Then he showed me the steel wire core before spiking up the tree to go to work.
