Work is at an all time Low

. I had thought things had gotten better for a while and then they got worse. Now they are worser. Foreman was fired. The new foreman is a "climber". He has climbed for "10 years" using only a buck strap and no rope. Had to talk him through a tree the other day using a rope and the bosses gear. Later that day he proceeded to tell me exactly how to do my job and that a port-a-wrap was a waist of groundsman. Such resistance to "new school bullshit" I almost came out of the tree for the first time ever and walked off the job. It got pretty heated especially when he hold me the rope man is in charge of how the cutting and rigging goes and not the climber. The kid and I mean kid on the crew fancies himself a swinger operator, and nobody knows how to use the stump grinder. Aside from partial pay and pay at random times and poor communication as to where and when for jobs. Half days when I get the climbing done early and get sent home even when the bid is a home run. Finished a 20k job a day early and got sent home because he wasn't gonna pay me for ground work. The new gear is already falling apart and the crew spends the entire day fighting between themselves. Everybody knows everything and nobody wants to listen. It's worser than it has ever been. I've gotta make a change. I've talked to the boss about driving 45 mins to get s portion of my pay and how disrespectful that is to me but nothing changes. Something has to give.

Thanks fellas. Got my fingers crossed. I've been a good damn employee. He should recognize that and pay me.

Hi Steve,

He doesn't recognize or appreciate that! Don't you get it? Someone else said it earlier, it is a toxic relationship. You just keep setting yourself up for the fall expecting him to respect you, just like you respect others. Some people are not capable of respecting another human.

It is not in their wheelhouse - they have no reference point for it, yet you (me) keep trying to earn their respect. We work ourselves to death around these people expecting an approving nod. It will never come. There are unhealthy people to be around and this guy sounds like one of them. Ultimately we are disrespecting ourselves, becoming doormats.

Expect nothing from him, not even your back-pay and you won't be disappointed when you get nothing in return.

I wish you all the best. You are a great dad and a great guy. Just move on.

Mark

Well I did it. Finally. I accepted a job with another company as the lead climber on the crane crew!! Hour long interview and great conversation. They've been in the biz for 25 years and the owner has climbed for 30. 7 to 3 job and he didn't blink an eye on my pay. Said 30 wasn't even on his high end for a good climber. Totally happy to work with my schedule. Small crane but that just means small pics. Kinda green crew but the foreman has his stuff together. I've worked with him before at my current gig.

He told me I can start asap but I feel like I need to give 2 weeks notice. I'll probably get fired as soon as I give notice but the new guy said if so call him and he'll send me an address to a job site. No more climbing alone. No more of a lot of shit I've dealt with for years.

Steve, BIG congratulations! This to me sounds like your dream gig! With a guy running the show who seems like a relaxed veteran of the tree wars. I am betting that you are going to be very happy in your new work situation.

The fact that your crew might be green could just mean that you'll be able to train them right, until the whole crew works like a well oiled machine together.

Best of luck to you.

Tim

Thank Gawd, Steve! I think I can speak for all of us when I say "We're glad you're getting out of that Sh*t Show!" I'm much like you - not wanting to burn bridges, not wishing to offend. But you owe the old boss NOTHING!!! Don't even hesitate or give it a thought! Hopefully he'll pay you the $800, but if not, so what? You've been so miserable and tortured, I think there have been times you would pay $800 to get out of there. This might be it.

Anyway, congrats!

congrats on the new gig. I would tell your old boss that something personal came up and you really need that $800 he owes you, if he pays you then say thanks, also Im leaving. Places like that you might not want to hang around for two weeks, lord only knows what they might throw at you during that time. If you respect him and he has been honest and treated you right, then def stay the two weeks. If not, you don't owe him anything. He paid you for a service which by all accounts you preformed safely and for a profit. Good luck

Congrats, Steve! This is the best thing that could happen for you.

As for your current company, you live in an at-will state. They are not required to give you notice or even a reason for termination, that also applies to you when leaving. You have no obligation to say anything other than I won't be back. Don't want to burn a bridge? Be professional and tell him you'll be leaving as a better opportunity has be offered you. No need to explain just tell him it's all round better. Thank him for the opportunity and that you've learned a great deal from your time with the company (that covers the good and the bad). Ask him to settle up with you for the $800. If he says he doesn't have it right now then negotiate a time frame that he will pay you by. Click Here for the law on this.

He's made his circumstances and this is not your burden. As said above, it's a toxic relationship that is long due to end.

Good luck on Monday!!

Wow. Thats a pretty interesting read. Thank you. I told him today I was leaving. I told him it was for several reasons and that I am not happy there and need to make a change. I told hime I was giving notice and trying to do the rite thing then thanked him for the time I worked for him. He shook my hand and said ok. Didn't have much to say the rest of the day. He didn't seem pissed just looked like somebody stole his birthday. Went much better than I had expected. Worked my ass off like I alway do but got sent home at 12 because all the climbing was done. That happens but not often. Glad I did it and will be even more glad when the week is over and maybe have cash in hand. Every day I work i'm adding to the total. The old school guy i'm working with totally agreed with my decision and knows they guys i'm going to work for from 30 years ago when they first started out together. Evidently my current boss is into the old school climber for a pretty penny too. I appreciate it treehumper. Thanks for the legal lesson.

Steve, I wished you lived in VT close to me. I would love to hire a guy like you with your attitude and skill set. I would take such good care of you. I'm amazed at employers who have not come to the realization that their biggest asset in their business is their employees. I am looking for a good skilled foremen if your looking to travel north. Lots of crane work!! Congrats on the new gig, keep us posted.
