word record tree move

Re: world record tree move

There were some big ( 18") trees moved bareroot at Longwood gardens awhile back. Sugar maple and European beech. The weight limit was 8 tons 'cause they lifted them with a helicopter. The beech died the next year... last I looked the sugar maple was still alive and starting to get normal sized foliage ( it had quarter sized leaves foe a few years after the move).

Re: world record tree move

With the use of air excavation now tree moving is in a new era. The Longwood trees weren't excavated with air if I remember. That means more root trauma.

Using air means that the fine roots can be moved without adding weight to the root ball.

Nevic showed me pictures of a transplant that they did using air excavation. There was a dense concentration of roots near the trunk like we'd expect. The radius was actually smaller than what a caliper/root ball ratio would assume. If the tree were dug a LOT of dirt would have been moved. What they found by using air was that there were a couple of long runner roots going off with nice mats of fine roots attached. these mats were about 2' out from the trunk. Using air it was simple to bring those mats along with the transplant. Nevic told me that by using air excavation it seemed easier and faster than just using shovels.
