Will crane = Lazy?

We seemed to have gotten a little off subject but still interesting info. Will crane make me lazy? As the operator I'll usually set Big John into position, then make him run out the rest of the tree. Trying to keep him in shape. Play the game beat the ball. Try to get to the next objective before the operator can set the peice down, unhook his load and get back up to you. Be safe!

A company I work for quite some time ago had the same set up. This was the first sort of crane that I used. It made it easy to wiggle into spots a regular crane couldn't go.

The bad aspect of it was that it had remote control with a retard at the controls. By retard I mean the guy chipped his leg and 6 months later he chipped his wooden leg. That was the Einstein at the controls.

repeat leg chipping...now that is a story!!! thanks for sharing that one. you don't want anyone w/eucman tendencies near the controls of a log cart let alone a crane.warning guy in following photo is euc/oakman hybrid.

cam these logs were picked 82 feet from column and truck was parked on incline. don't side load boom when rotating! when in dought... take a smaller piece! i'll break out the big wood pictures someday. bed sits high for heavy-duty subframe and hoist. iron to answer your questions:121'h,100'side reach (1013 lbs. only) cost= 3-4 times what i paid for my house. (yeah, i'm an arbor-addict.)

The guys I worked for said they paid around $250,000 for the boom alone and then cost of a new truck and labor to install the boom. It was a Fasi boom. I think it had 115' of reach. Fully extended it would only handle around 200# or that is what I was aloud to put on it. I would stretch it once in awhile.

Mike, guess you don't have a wife and kids breathing down your neck. Wife gets concerned ever time I buy or want to buy something over $100K. Defiantly one sexy unit! /forum/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Mike, you are a bona fide peacock! I love it! I got told I was a peacock for polishing my aluminium dump last summer. But it sure looked good! Gotta be proud to represent!

the crane doesn't make me lazy. it helps me save enough energy for the wife and kids. it gives me more time with them (fly through jobs) and overall makes a little more coin i don't know what they cost now w/increase in price of new high tensile effer uses. the dealer told me about 30% higher than when i built mine. mangoes -i'm just trying to show the industry in a positive light. (yeah, i know its a little overboard.)

hey, todd k. here's more photos as you requested! one of todays jobs. (4 hrs. 2 men) the homeowner is a retired crane opperator. his last job was opperating a 275 ton manatowac 999 (crawler!) he said cranes don't make you lazy, but you have the right crane for the right job. he complimented on my rig saying "it's like they designed your crane just for tree work."
