Will crane = Lazy?

Thanks
That's an awesome crane of Aspens. I've got a few questions. How much side reach at how much weight? How high does crane extend?? Price for crane and for truck. What year built? Do you put it on driveways? If so, any damage-cracks? Weight of truck with crane and wood? What is GVW? Also, does anyone own or use a 23 ton crane? These come with dual axles in the back? If so, do you ever set up on client's driveways? I need help making the best buying decision.

I have a 12 ton crane w/ tandem axle. I do set up on drives. The weight is actually spread out more. but the potential damage increases when turning. If the drive has chances of damage I set up and drive on plywood.

Welcome to Treebuzz!

This is the right forum to ask questions. You can start a new thread if you want advice about buying a crane. It's generally easier to follow a topic if the thread doesn't get sidetracked too far.

Did a tree Thursday morning, probably worth a look. I'll post some pics as soon as I can. I was working for another contractor and they took their own pics. it wouldn't look too good if I turn up with cameras and extra people.

They supplied 180' tower, 100 ton crane, cipper, bobcat, trucks and road closure. Still had to rope a 50' piece of the head because the tower was too short.

There are machines available to make our work easier and our prices more competative, why wouldn't we use them. The question posed, in the equation of the thread, has nothing to do with being lazy.

That's a heck of a lot of questions Iron! /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif Did you check this out yet:? New Log Truck

A bunch of your questions are answered there. Yes I take it on drives and no damage yet. Used it today to remove a smaller but tricky cherry tree. Very useful truck!

Norm, Allmark --- you got it the guys Name is Michael Poor very cool looking setup he runs --- told me he spent two years research'in b4 he put the rig together, maybe i'll call him monday and tell him the buzz is talking about him. /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Thanks for showing me to The New Log Truck. I'm starting to understand Treebuzz now. I'll start a new thread in a couple of days on buying a crane. As for becoming lazy with a crane, I don't think so. Everythings faster and more efficient then it's off to the next job. I'd sure like to see some pics of Michael Poors set-up.

Hey Iron on answering one of your ealier questions on crane on driveways. We have a 27.5 ton crane and will break plenty, mostly concrete. We have a trailer dedicated to just Plywood and Alturna Mats. About 20 3/4CDX Plywood And 20 3'x8' Alturna Mats. Lots of older 3/4 2'x8'CDX. Driveway Aprons are the worst. We will double even triple plywood and or Alturna Mats there. Plywood always on the Bottom. Diamond plating will scuff driveways and even inprint on Asphalt. Usually double up going up the driveway. Plywood with Alturna Mat on top. Double up even when you go into yards. Hardly know we were there.

Absolutely. Even seen weight of truck imprint alturna mat in cold weather. All you need is a bright sun on that asphalt to create a little heat. Keep those alturna mats for the turf. Also Alturna mats will burn grass on hot sunny days. Doesn't help that those mats are black. They do make the white ones now. Better buy than the black. Keep that in mind. On another subject, a friend of mind parked his rubber track loader over night on someones asphalt driveway. It also left an impression after a hot day. /forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif

thanks. im planning on getting some this spring. You probably just saved me alot of driveway repair money. better to learn here than the hard way. Thanks

I learned the hard way. Drove up a driveway at a bad angle and felt the crunching of the corners of concrete breaking in the truck. There I was on a Saturday with my concrete friend tearing up about 3 yards of concrete. This was all before throwing down some plywood. Now it's a religion. Dont't leave home without it!

Just called Michael Poor - the guy with the radio control crane /forum/images/graemlins/cool.gif - he says he will check in, he's aware of the buzz and will post pics.

sorry forgot to call him earlier

dave, thanks for the call! i've been using radio controlled lg. articulating cranes for eight years. i run the remote in the tree while: climbing, rigging, cutting etc. gives climber precise control (had a couple of close calls with rental crane opperator years ago that helped make the decision to buy crane w/remote.

I remember seeing that unit when I was driving from Minneapolis to Dallas one time. I thought that it was in Oklahoma. Wasn't there an article in TCI or Arbor Age a number of years ago about the setup?

Nice fleet of machines with LOTS of curb appeal.
